IntThe Barrie Examiner Thursday October I976 SPORTS CORNER new season full of change By RANDY MCDONALD Examiner Sports Editor changed Ontario Hockey Association Senior league swings into operation Friday with high hopes new faces and an upstart Barrie Flyers hockey club Besides their new colors Flyers will have seven new faces in the lineup to fill the gaps left by the wheeling and dealing of the Flyers management during the past few monthsl Steve Cripps general manager of the Flyers reports 11 veteran players are back with the defending league cham pions He says the Flyers have come to terms with veterans Ken Knapton Ron Robertson goaltender Ron Patterson and coach Darryl Sly Sly says Cripps will be back for his sixth term as playing coach of the Flyers Helping with the coaching duties will be Fern St Onge Some of the rookies Flyers hope to have signed before Fridays season opener against the Lindsay Lancers include George Milner Bob Peppler and goaltender Billy Harper Barrie opens new season against the Lancers at the Bar rie Arean beginning at 830 pm Mississauga Golden Arrows make their debut in the Senior league with game in Orillia against the Terriers with Cambridge Hornets on the road against Brantford Alexanders the other new entry in the league Fiyers preseason record stands at four wins and two losses Missing from the clubs lineup for the season opener will be defencemen Steve Sly and Doug Ferguson along with for wards Bob Monteith and Peppler All four players have one game remaining in twogame suspension picked up during the exhibition season Each has sat out one exhibition game as result of the fighting penalties Bill McGill is again the leagues convener He has alwaysI had high hopes for the Senior league and expects this season to bear witness to better class of hockey and betterbalanced league Flyers and the Thunder Bay Twins simply overpowered the rest of the league last season McGill feels that Flyers and Twins will again be in the thick of things this season but with pressure from the Cambridge Hornets But hes not counting out the remainder of the league In fact McGill appears convinced the entire league will come on strong The league is between 2330 per cent stronger says Z1cGill He backs his statement by calling to light the number of cxpros each club has picked up Each of the eight teams are allowed to sign six expros this season chill was uncertain of the exact number signed Wednesday but said there would be between 3540 signed without fail by Christmas He says the senior clubs are holding number of cards open to sign cuts from the pro clubs Ilyers joined in the leagues fullscale hunt for fresh talent There are three rookies on defence three up front and one in net To make room for the newcomers Flyers erased number of proven players most noteably veteran captain Corby Adams lie and defenceman Jim Thompson along with goaltender Grant ole were the first to feel the axe All three were sold to the rillia Terriers Adams scored 21 goals last season as Flyer and was sixth 111 the leagues scoring The dealing off of Adams came as slicok to hardcore Flyers fans who had followed Adams career for some 14 years Both Adams and Thompson failed to Show at the last two Icrriers practices lub president George Maconachic said lencsday that Adams had called to let him know he couldnt make it last night while Thompson was reported to be recovering from an injury picked up during preseason game Defenccmen Dan ODonohue and forward John McMillan went to Brantford with McMillian reported as assuming the coaching duties of the new entry Then went Don Pagnutti who had Bigoals last season He was sold to the Whitby Warriors Flycrs are going to find it hard to duplicate last years success story which vaulted them into the Allan Cup finals in Spokane Wash McGill says the deals made by the Flych will help the ieaguc and that some of the replacements will more than fill the empty shoes What has happened is that the calibre of the Flyers hasnt gone up that much compared to the other teams he said Its hard to improve on the club they had last year Flyers star Bob Baird with 34 goals and 44 assists for 78 points won the league scoring championship last season Hes back with linemates Paul Regan and Phil Branston which represented the hottest scoring line in the Senior loop The supporting cast on offence includes Gary Lyte 133 goals in his rookie season last year Knapton Robinson and rookies Terry Agnew and Milncr Flycrs had 75 points to place first in the Senior loop last season one more than the Twins Thunder Bay is expected to be tough again this season They had two or three ex pros on the hook noted McGill Cambridge and Whitby will be stronger as result of their work in securing topnotch players Whitby singed Eddie Shack although fans throughout the league may only get an occasional glimpse of The Entertainer as the Warriors ap pear satisfied to have Shack show up for home games 114 ismW BOTTLED IN BOND mu mo Inall Two sets of rules says Bep Guidolin EDMONTON CP Bep Guidolin coach and general manager of Edmonton Oilers of the World Hockey Association said Wednesday he learned in an exhibition game with Winni peg Jets that there are two sets of rules in theA HA Theyve got professional rules for most of us and ama teur rules for Winnipeg he told news conference The amateur rules say dont hit the foreigners Guidolin echoed complaint heard in most league centres last season that Swedish stars Anders Hedberg Ulf Nilsson and LarsEric Sjoberg and Fin referees are human you know They read that stuff in the pa ers Guidolin who sai coach Bobby Kromm and injured star Bobby Hull of the Jets are wise to keep complaining because it gives them an advantage sug gested Winnipeg wants the rules changed to do away with bodychecking in the neutral zone Thats European style They would do away with bod ychecking altogether if they could In Winnipeg Kromm said he doesnt want to get involved in the discussion saying he merely considered where the comments came from How would Guidolin know Hes only played one WHA game Eastwick honored NEW YORK IAP
