more to the Barrie Public Library than shelves filled with books This fall the adult film and childrens departments of the library are of ering variety of activities and special events The adult department at 37 Mulcaster St is featuring an art show from the Ontario Art Gallery in october The show is called The Golden Age of Justinian This is followed by show in November featuring historical photographs from the Simcoe County Archives Three Canadian authors Phyllis Gottlieb Ted Plantos and David McFadden are giv ing readings of their work at pm Nov The authors are sponsored by the Canadian government as part of its plan to bring Cana dian authors to the public During the same afternoon from2 to4 pm the authors are holding workshop for Barrie high school students in the library In December another On tario Art Gallery show is scheduled featuring the draw ings of Michelangelo The library also holds an English conversation group meeting every Saturday from 10 am to noon It is open to new citizens who have taken English language lessons but want to improve their skills ART RENTALS The Barrie Art Club also holds its monthly art rental at the adult department the first Saturday of each month from to pm Area residents rent paintings on monthly basis for their homes The library is starting pic ture loan service this fall Library members will borrow prints of paintings the same way they borrow books Another feature is the listen ing posts which will be installed soon This will allow people to use headphones to listen to records in different parts of the library The secretary recalls instead she got friendly wellbehaved 11yearold Michelle Drever Matched in May the two spend from few hours to more than day together each week and are best of friends Michelle calls Karen every day when she gets home from school Fifty per cent of our mat ches are good as Karens says Jeanne Harris president of the Big Ssiter Association of Barrie Friday marked the beginning of Big Ssiters Week and the association plans to spend the week through next Saturday spreading the word about the Big Sister program The association has been in existence year now and has 10 matches the to 16 who need more adult female companionship than their families can provide Big sisters who must be at least 19 provide that companionship They are not social workers and are not expected to solve prob lems but are instead to concen trate on providing friendly supportive atmosphere and willing ear Mrs Kornyk interviews prospective little sisters while Mrs Harris interviews big sisters trips work at er cot tage dinner in her home and stretch in the hospital emergen cy ward trying to get Michelles asthma medicine replenished The most important thing she gives Michelle she says is someone to talk to dont think she holds back when she talks to me she says Michelle who lives with her father and grandmother simp ly lists being with my big sister as her favorite part of the program
