at RCA By NANCY IIilERU The Examiner In 1974 RCA Ltd in Midland reported that first aid was needed in 12747 incidents iii votving its 1000 employees To date in 1978 only 4639 incidents of first aid have been ad ministered The reason for this tremendous decrease in ac cidents lies in safety awareness program intrixluced at the plant in October 1975 The safety awareness pro gram was initiated shortly after RA was assessed with $450tlt fine by the Workmans Compensation Board The fine was excessive incidents of plant accidents tn luesday Ron Blanchard administrator of employee ser vices at the RA plant in Midland spoke at dinner meeting held by the Industrial Accident Prevention Associa tion IAIA at the Holiday Inn We had disgusting safety record said Blanchard We knew we had to change it before things got any worse The RtA plant manufactures only one product color picture tubes Blanchard explained that the picture tubes weigh from to to tilt lbs Many of our injuries were back injuries and sprains caused from lifting and cuts caused from handling glass he said The company records also showed that in 74 there were 71 occasions where time was lost from work because of in juries In ttmt this number has dwindled down to seven PROGRAM INIIIAIIII the program initiated at lttA involved several things total commitment from everyone at RtA training of supervisors revitalized program we gave them written tests and driving tests We wanted to keep the safe drivers on the mad and the other drivers off the road The final stage of the safety program called for modified work program Through this program injured workers with the consent of their doctors were given jobs that were suited to the incapacities caus ed by their injuries Instead of an employee being off work three weeks with an injury he was only off one week said Blanchard He would not be returned to his old job but was given job he was capable of doing This was not make work program either these were jobs that were necessity to the company Ihrough computerized records of all accidents RCA learned that the day shift had the greatest number of ac cidents and that of all employees aged 18 to 22 years most have an accident within their first three months of work This told us that we had to improve our training pro gram he said Blanchard said that the pro gram is working in Midland because every employee is in volved with it and every employee is committed to it We still have way to go but we are going in the right direction he said It is our employees who have made it work They dont want to
