group home they lion adequately As result we have set limit of five boys in area for group homts We could use at least five more group homes he said The demand is increasing because we are in very short supply of foster homes We have an urgent need to provide homelike environ ment for all children said Neil McGee liaison coordinator for CAS In many instances we have been unable to provide such care or we have overloaded ex isting homes to point where have been unable to func the new home hoping this might prove effective and workable for both boys and parents Studies have shown that teen age boys benefit most fmm group home environment Many still have their own parents and are not prepared to accept new parents However they continue to need caring family Hopefully Huronia Rotary House will fulfill these needs Jackson said that he has not had any complaints from residents in the area about the group home We hope to work closely with the neighbors to insure that they dmt have any complaints he said We plan to invite the neighbors in for tour of the house and to discuss any of their own cmcems The five boys will move into the house in the last week of November Morton House needs space to handle growing demand Morton House is looking for new home nsored by the Kiwanis lu of Kempenfclt Bay Morr ton House on Burton Avenue is temporary residence for young people in need of shelter Due to bylaw in the area limiting the number of unrelated persons in one dwcll ing to five and lack of space the present house can only are cornmodatc fivc residents Morton HOUSt has bccomc very popular and we require more space says Mark Scharf club prcsidcnt He said the club wants Morr ton House to movc to larger building in Barrie or the sur munding area than can housi to persons When asked if Morton llousc ever turned away young people brought to thc hoiisc because of space restrictions Schiirf said no one is denied entrance for that reason Morton House is operated with funds from Ontarios Ministry of community and social services that are ad ministered by the Kiwanis Club Iwo directors Gary and Ellen Pierreluigi operate the home on daily basis along with other domestic staff The club submits budget to the ministry for approval each year The club is also responsi ble for giving guidance to the directors of the home He says similar establish ment run by the government would be five or six times more costly to operate than Morton lilillSt The ministry is pleas ed with the way Martini House is being run he said In operation since 1976 Mor ton House is different from other group homes said Scharf In other places residents stay for long periods of time while Morton House shelters young neople for maximum of two eks They arrive at the home rugh number of different cnannels including being pick ed up on the street by the police or being sent by family court judge After their stay at Mor tm House residents may go to training schools foster homes or back home Before Morton House began youths needing tem orary pro tection were hous in an old wing of the Barrie Jail where they stayed in cells The Kiwanis Club saw the need for home and opened Morton House two
