Childrens Book Festival run festival By STEPHEN GAUIIR The Examiner Everyone likes funny books says Leslie Gathers Grade student at Allan dale Public School in her review of lar bage Delight one of Dennis Lees books of poetry for kids Leslies right of course everyone does like funny books but only child would dare to make such an obvious statement This week The IIxaminer IS turning over The Book Page to students from llandale Public School whove written book reviews and created drawingsl for Lois llowright one of the teachers at the school Mrs Plowright is strong supporter of the Childrens Book Festival being celebrated for the second year in Canada from Nov la 025 The Festival Is sponsored by The Childrens Book Centre which was established in 1976 to promote the reading writing publishing and selling of Canadian childrens books Through special events such as the Festival the Centre tries to bring Canadian hooks to the attention of teachers librarians booksellers and children To do this the Centre assembles list of 144 outstanding Canadian books for all ages and on all subjects The length and variety of that list relfects the growth thats oe curred in childrens book publishing over the past 10 years Like adult Canadian books childrens books are being published and promoted in greater numbers than ever before AT THE LIBRARY At the childrens branch of the Barrie Public Library Margaret Worth the pro gram coordinator says that no special ac tivities are planned to celebrate the Childrens Book Festival Every week is book week for us she said Were always interested in getting kids to readfiwere here and so are 33000 books for children Mrs Worth says that parents today are more concerned about their childrens reading habits than they used to be Parents are becoming more aware of childrens needs lot of parents will give their kids only the best books and theyre very discerning and knowledgeable about them Theyre better educated and more aware and more critical of television Parents are also coming into the library earlier than they used to Theyre reading to their kids thats very important in get ting child to love books And the parents are not afraid to criticize book theyll tell us what they think about it We rely on input from both kids and parents so we can be aware of needs Books for kids are becoming more ana dian said Mrs Worth The major markets have been in America and England but now Canadians are starting to believe in themselves Jur rationale is to get the kids into the library get them happy and comfortable here and then they will see libraries as places for information fun and books The attitude has to be warm and positive one thats very important You might describe the following book reviews as warm and positive too trade student could care less about the stylistic intricacies that fascinate the adult critic hes likely more interested in what the book is about and how well the story is told Now its time to meet
