and save for one arrie tot oloi hoto Drunk doctors are menace By GIFFORDJONES First of two parts No one willingly flies with alcoholic or drugaddicted pilots Regulatory bodies act quickly to remove such menace But the same reasoning has never applied to doc tors Thats why some Canadians are treated occasionally by an impaired physician if and when that happens pa tients should know what to do it could prevent serious medical complications And alert medical consumer may also be of more help to an addicted doctor than his own col leagues The British Medical Journal of Hospital Medicine reported on the magnitude of the problem in 1977 It said that an ability to hold ones liquor was almost mandatory for medical students today But heavy drinking in these early years may be the prelude to alcoholism Striking statistics backed up these warnings For in stance the death rate for cirrhosis of the liver in English doctors was 350 per cent higher than that of the general population Of 80 physicians who committee suicide 39 were alcoholics Alcoholism and drug dependence were disturb ingly common among doctors And many of the alcoholics were psychiatrists There were several other worrying aspects of this report It concluded that British and US doctors appeared to be physically healthier than the general population But the 0p posite was true of their mental health BLIND EYE It struck at the heart of the problem in Britain and North America Historical fact showed that doctors always turned blind eye to drunken or drugaddicted colleagues surgeon might be hungover with unsteady hands Yet no one did anything about it And the report noted that physi cians accepted without question statements about the health of other doctors based on reasoning so false that they would immediately reject it from anyone else Dr David Smith director of the Haight Ashbury Free Clinic in San Francisco recently emphasized the immensity of the problem in the US He said that there were 17000 im paired physicians in that country Other studies suggest that perhaps 10 per cent of all doctors suffer from alcohol or drug addiction tried to measure the Canadian situation But ran into one road block after another Some sources were hesitant to discuss it Others agreed to forward data Other promised to call back But that was the last heard from them Denial of the problem is prevalent Hesitancy to talk about the trouble constitutes the main stumbling block Addicted doctors are protected by the bud dy system Repeatedly colleagues cover up for misde meanors Professional courtesy breaks down only when an impaired physician has major brush with the law Or cause serious medical complication The potential for danger is high For example the US journal Medical World News mentions surgeon who was addicted to demerol During long operations he would have to leave the operating room for another shot of the drug Finally he was apprehended speeding along highway He claimed he was trying to escape from persecutors who were about to disincmber him He was suffering hallucinations For nine years he had been taking different drugs His col leagues were aware of his addiction but had done nothing to expose him lltltillllINthi TALES There were other frightening tales An alcoholic surgeon who performed an emergency tracheotomy had no recollec tion of having done so the following day Doctors who depend on drugs are special breed of ad dict Theres no need for them to buy the watereddown variety on some back alley They have easy access to pure drugs which are more potent But this kind also causes greater deiwndency Theyre also toners who often deny ad diction to the grave Eyery Canadian doctor knows theres problem in this country Responsible physicians must also admit patients face needless hazards because of these doctors But doing something about it is horse of another color No one wants to be the bad guy Turning in an addicted colleague is much like squealing on your own mother So everyone passes the ball hoping that good luck and an oeca sional nudge wdl keep an embarrassing physician in line But this approach isnt fair to the personal the street Next week lll report on what some American states are do mg to prevent possible tragedies How our provinces should act similarly to clean up our backyard And how the medical consumer can be of more help to the addicted doctor than his own colleagues Letter on this problem may be sent to Rt Box Niagara Falls Ontario 12mm Ann Landers Phoneaholics dont give up Dear im Landers From time to time people complain to you
