10A the exanlner Friday Oct 20 1978 Sketches water colors highlight artists show By STEPIIEi GAUER The Examiner Lorraine Hoveys artistic career goes back long way right back to the age of seven when her attempts to decorate wall in her parents home in Toronto prompted psychiatrists comment that she should be encouraged to paint The psychiatrists comment was prophetic At ten Lorraine Hovey was taking private art lessons from Owen Fife while she was atten ding boarding school in Barrie at 16 she had first commission cover for some sheet music which paid her $763 and by her early 1205 she was display ing her work in group show at the National iallery of ariada intttawa And since their Mrs llovey has proved to be versatile talented and consistently pro ductive artist ller oil painr tings water colors and sket clies are iir public collections in Toronto and Ottawa and in private collections around the world Harrie residents have chance to see siriall sampling of Mrs Hoveys work protr traits landscapes and sketches at the tarrie rt lub Gallery iii the Downtown en tre on Dunlop Street until the end of October The show features subjects common to much of her work buildings and boats faces and and scapes natural life interpreted realistically and abstractly but its only minute represen tation of her large artistic out put during the past 34 years The strongest works on display at the art club gallery are the pen arid ink sketches and the small water color pain tings of buildings and boats At its best Mrs lloveys work is relaxed and spontaneous deceptively simple expression of color and form line and shape that captures the essence of an old ham an old house or graceful sail boat with just the right amount of detail good artist knows that what you leave out of painting is often more important than what you put in and Mrs Hoveys sketches and water colors are splendid examples of this INTRIGLINGSIIIII Two of the water colors show an intriguing shift from purely representational art to something freer and more dif fuse ln thse two works depicting birds arid bird neests the paper was soaked with water before the color was up plied The colors are spread throughout the painting in soft clondglrke shapes stretching past the defining black lines that would normally liolil them iii check lhe effect is soft and warm siibiective and intimate lTnusual that create very personal and distinctive art Her work in medium called encaustic which creates three dimen sional effect by blending beeswax and pigment is good example None of Mrs Hoveys encaustic paintings are on display at the art club gallery unfortunately but her work in this ancient medium invented by the Greeks and perfected by the Egyptians 2000 years agoi deserves more recognition TAKING TUlR Walking through Mrs Hoveys home on Shanty Bay ltoad is like taking tour through small art gallery The rooms are bright and lxautitully furnished and the white walls are filled with art paintings by Mrs llovey and other artids photographs by her son tiucc and the irri piession created is oire of balance and proportion color and light all arranged ror max irriiirrr elleil lll everything blends iirio one harmonious whole the back ol the house Mrs Hoveys studio stretches two storeys high lliere are work tables pots tilled wrth brushes cabinets overflowing with pain tings and sketchbooks arid fill length windows on the side fac ing the backyard in one table sits sculpted head of woman tilted back as thouin watching the sky Mrs llovey explains that the tread is souvenir from her lays as young art student in Toronto In the early 1940s she studied at the ntariotollege of Art In 1943 determined to enter the armed forces she look course in drafting at lanforth Tech in Toronto and then went to work for the lttl first in mimi tions plant later in radar school iii tlinton tlntario which was the first of its kind in North America Two years later in 1943 she returned to EXPOSURE COLOUR FILM DEVELOPED AND PRINTED 39 Incl in Just Ml Eh In painting the beginning is exciting the middle is hard work and the end is icing putting in highlights pulling the painting together You have to watch you dont get caught up in the detail try to stay loose when paint thats very important especially with commissions You have to try not to get nervous love to draw thats the skeleton of the work the feel of the line Art isnt something you have to do its something you want to do But selfdiscipline is the basis of art thats the tough part because you must paint alone and its very lonely business And it is business as well as an art Mrs llovey Speaks as honestly about the practical aspects of her work as she does about the artistic ones The public doesnt realize that training costs have doubled in the past two years because of the increase iir materials and labor And when an artist sells his work through gallery his profit is inst little over to per cent and the cost of his riraterials must coirie out of that THINIIIIHIAIIRIISSLRES The commercial pressures are always present too it takes strength to paint what you want she says Its hard not to paint for the public Still Mrs llovey seeiris to have coped with those pressures very well her work is represented by galleries in ollingwoixL King arid Lindsay shes had eight onewoman shows in anada shes recently ex hibitcd at show that included work by William Kiirelek and Ken lanby and this fall shes received half dozen lllVlllih tions to show her paintings Shes managed to balance corn mercial and artistic success When shes trot working in Barrie or in loronto where she has studio apartment Mrs llovey enjoys travelling Last year she travelled for nine weeks throughout the South Pacific Australia and New Zealand sketch and take photographs and when travel do it because love it It doesnt sell well but meet people Art opens up so many avenues can always walk into gallery aird tecl at home To me whether youre painter or patron art opens up so many avenues all over the world Its lascinatrng and its always becna part ol my life Lorraine llovey has trairsloriirid her art into career of sclldrscovery
