fieowwmm nvw Test results recorded CALGARY CP Albertas highschool English teachers now have ammunition to com bat future accusations that graduates dont possess the reading and writing skills they used to Until now there have been no records kept on how proficient yaduates are in these skills says Graham Trentham lan guagearts specialist with the Calgary public school system Trentham says that with all the controversy over the alleged decline in reading and writing skills teachers were never able to refer to the ability of previous graduates But test given Albertas most recent graduates will ro vide teachers with stan ard against which to compare the reading and writing skills of fu ture graduates he says If in few years people say kids are doing worse than they have ever done we can test them and compare the results Trentham says the provinces 12800 Grade 12 students did as well as we hoped they would do on the test known as the 1978 achievement test in high school English But he stressed the 1978 test will be meaningless if similar exam is not given in the future decision that lies with the provinces department of education TEST WAS THOROUGH The test consisted of three part reading exam which con centrated on vocabula com prehension of ideas an appre ciation of style and writing examination which stressed thought and expression Two groups were tested about 9000 students taking English 30 and another 3800 taking English 33 English 30 is prerequisite for university en trance while the 33 level is usu ally taken by students who are less proficient in the subject Results of the test show Eng lish 30 students achieved bet ter score than those in English 33 fact Trentham says he at tributes to different literary abilities interests and courses English 30 students also scored better on standardized multiplechoice reading test He stresses that any con clusions made now are pre mature and all subject to com parisons with future tests The test took 120member committee three years to de velop He says he knows of no other test in Canada that covers so completely both students ability to write through the es say portion and the students knowledge of writing in the multiplechoice section The reason behind the scarc ity of such an exam is financ ing since it is less expensive to mark test made up solely of multiplechoice questions he says Machines are cheaper than people Family unit changing WINDSOR Ont CP Pre occupation with whether moth ers should work seems almost middleclass disease says Ed win Clark director of Wind sors Family Service Bureau In poor families mothers have always had to work and the children seemed to turn out OK he says think the in crease in working women has had no detrimental effect on the family He says that if women didnt work every hospital in town would close down All the women on my staff have children and work and certainly wouldnt say their children are neglected He says Society always changes and think the good old days is figment of the imagination cant accept it Theres less hypocrisy today than ever before and think its an exciting time in history Today fathers get home from work bathe their kids and play with them Clark says They cultivate personal relation ships How then can you say the family unit is breaking down THEORIES UNFOUNDED He says society has been bombarded with many theories about family life being all but gone But perhaps family life is changing not crumbling and some are finding that change too devastating to handle Clark says he doesnt buy any of the family breaking up theories Ive never seen any evidence to back it up but Im assuming by whats been said that someone thinks at some point in time there was such thing as stable family He says we have past his tory problem always talking about the good old days and as suming they were better And thats ridiculous if you want to get historical just look back to the turn of the century and youll see that most people died early from disease and erty pollI wouldnt say that provided stable family settin He says Fami tea may break up more today but at least both arties are around for the chi ren to know and en joy The SALE
