people in the Barrie area telling them about special recreational program in the city for mentally retarded people The program is scheduled to start Oct 18 But she would like some volunterrs to help her Mrs Gordon told the Barrie recreation advisory committee Thursday she can run the pro gram as it is planned now Butit is fairly limited she said and will only include teen igers and adults The problem is that Im the only one working on it she said And only know so many crafts and so many games The program includes teaching various crafts yoga floor hockey cooking and danc ing And Mrs Gordon would like it to expand to include all ages of mentally retarded in the area She has prepared handbook for volunteers in her special recreation services branch of the cityepartment of parks and recreation The book explains how impor tant the volunteers are and outlines the purpose of the pro gram Mrs Gordon who specializes in therapeutic recreation said the program has ulterior motives behind the fun recrea tional activities She said the idea is to teach the people to adapt to their disabilities The program development is funded by ministry of com munity services grant for $10000 to the city Mrs Gordon said she hoped by the time the grant money was used the special recrea tion programs would be operating for all handicapped people in the city Gary Stoner director of parks and
