TOFI By SHEILA McGOVERN ExaminerStaff Re rter When Albert Pautsc walked in front of his new class his first question was How many of you are farmers Faces flushed and no one answered They were embarrassed to say they were farmers he said Mr Pautsch said part of his job as instructor of the new agricultural equipment and farm mechanics program at Eastview secondary school is bringing pride back into farm mg He also considers convincing young people to stay in farming another facet of his role The program is the result of three years work by Mr Pautsch and is the first of its kind anywhere in Ontario The course is given through the technical department and focuses on agriculture me chanization or power farming Mr Pautsch who describes himself as mechanic by trade and farmer and teacher by choice and cultivation said prqgram of this kind is essen ia Any nations economy de pends on the basic elements of food and fiber he said Canadians spend an average of 18 per cent of their income on food and were lucky he ad ded However the farmers lot is not an easy one in todays socie ty Mr Pautsch said At one time there was man the farmer versus the soil Then came machines The farmer is being reduced to helpless operator Mr Pautsch said He is more or less at the financial mercy of the implement dealer Farm machinery is expen sive and farmers do not unders tand machines the way they do soil said Mr Pautsch Few farmers ever read the operating manuals that ac company their equipment and probably wouldnt understand them if they did he added want the farmer to be in complete control of the machine Mr Pautsch said and that is why he has fought to have an agricultural rogram introduced at the big school level Ontario is one of the finest areas for farmin and the University person to vote for school board trustee up to five times school board ward can include more than one municipality such as Stayner Creemore Nottawasaga and Sunnidale person OWning property in all four municipalities has the right to vote for each municipal council but at the same time would receive ballot for school board Following the 1972 election Ben Straughan Barrie city clerk said voting more than once for school board representatives is possible and results from an inequity in the Municipal Elec tions Act He said he could see no way of correcting the situation ad ding the onus is on the voter to cast only one ballot In an interview today John Roland of TEIGA in Orillia said he agrees with Mr Straughans opinion The practice Mr Roland said would appear to be illegal but is very hard to police polling clerk in Stayner has no way of knowing an in dividual voted in Creemore he said Section 47 subsection five of the Munici al Elections Act states no person may vote more than once or the
