6The Barrie Examiner Monday Sept 27 1976 MARK DUNN left shows pictures of Mexico to his mother Kathy and Margaret Murray Kay Moriarity and Mary and John Komar The six met at the home of Mrs Dunn to dicuss the Interna tional Student Exchange pro gram Examiner photo This student exchange plan much more than sightseeing By ROSEANNE McCABE things that travel is the Examiner StaffWriter greatest teacher and that the What are mothers for if they International Student Ex dont remind you to hang up your clothes Thats part of life for many Canadian 14yearolds But not so in Mexico And it didt take lon for 14 yearold Mark Dunn Barrie to adapt to the Mexican good life where the servants did everything After he returned from an eightweek student exchange trip to Monterrey Mom was back atit But mom in Mexico you of fend the servants if you hang up your own clothes Mark protested This servant wont be of fended his mother said Despite having to reprogram her son Kathy Dunn has only good things to say about her sons trip She is convinced of two change Program is the greatest way to travel And it is quite the program says Kay Moriarity of Calgary Canadian represen tative of the Mexican based program who visited Barrie recently She met with Mrs Dunn her son Mark Mr and Mrs John Komar of Barrie and Margaret Murray of Angus at Mrs Dunns home The latter three were program hosts for students from Mexico HOW IT WORKS think there is deeper pur pose to this program than to lot of exchange programs Mrs Moriarity said Its not sightseeing trip Itsa family experience think basic at titudes in young students change because of the ex perience That is seven years ex ENGAGEMENT Mr and Mrs Mervin Booth of Stroud announce the for thcoming marriage of their daughter Alice Joan to Robin at David Robertson eldest son of Rubv Robertson and the late Cecil Robertson of Stroud The wedding will take place Saturday Oct 16 pm at St James United Church Stroud Cowper photo ANN LANDERS She needs info on swine flu Dear Ann Landers Please tell me and millions of others what this swine flu thing is all about need some nononsense answers to the following questions Why is the US government spending $135 million on pIOJ ect when there is no evidence that there will be swine flu epidemic When will the shots be available to the public Is there chance that person can get swine flu from the shot Who should take the shot Who should NOT take it Is the shot safe for pregnant women How effective will the shot be What are the possible side effects Are YOU going to have swine flu shot Thanks for your help Its wonderful to have somebody to turn to for reliable information We Appreciate You In New York Dear NY The US government is Spending $135 million on the swine flu proect because it believes in preventive medicine There may no epidemic but if one should occur it could be devastating In 195758 over 70000 people in the US died of the Asian flu In 196869 the Hong Kong flu claimed 30000 lives The swine flu shots will be available by Oct Dr Theodore Cooper assistant health education and welfare secretary in the United States estimates that the shots should protect about 85 per cent of those who take them The other 15 per cent should get milder cases than if they had no shot at all There is NO chance that person will get the flu from the shot because the vaccine is made of killed virus The only significant side effects MAY be sore arm and fever The government ran an experiment on 6000 volunteers Out of those who received the swine vaccine 19 per cent developed fever that lasted about 24 hours or less Should children get the shot The researchers are still work ing on dosages for children under 18 However those children who are inclined to get fevers should NOT get the shot it is strongly recommended that adults over 18 get the regular swine flu shots 200 units of AoNew Jersey76 For the highrisk population those over 60 those who have chronic heart disease respiratory problems diabetesor cancer atients who are in treatment combination of the swine vaccine and Victoria75 is recommended There is no reason why pregnant woman should not take the swine flu shot It has been emphasized that the shot should NOT be taken by individuals who are allergic to eggs this includes pregnant women Am taking the swine flu shot You bet am Ill be one of the first in line the moment they are available perience talking Hundreds of students have passed through the home of Dr and Mrs Joseph Moriarity in that time The program was started in 1959 by Benedictine priest Rev Placid Reitmeier an American in Mexico He had one aim to educate his studen ts proficiently in the English language At first Father Reitmeier sent his students to friends and relatives in the US Then the word spread Now eager paren ts and devoted volunteers do most of Father Reitmeiers field work for him The only paid people in the organization are the secretary and the con troller Why is the program so suc cessful Why so many volun teers Its not superficial says Mrs Moriarity PLANNING Theres great deal of plan ning before the students pack their bags There are preliminary interviews with students and parents legal documents to be signed letters telephone calls and more let ters It takes two months processing The end result is an accurate matching of students and an experience hell never forget And during the students visit the delegate can be reached by telephone Mrs Dunn is one of fivc delegates in Ontario and one of 10in Canada Mrs Moriarity in her two years as Canadian rep has travelled extensively Shc has seen much of Mexico and Con tral America John and Mary Komar of Barrie just sent 14yearold Mexican boy back to his Mon terrey home after twomonth stay and hes still raving about his visit He didnt see the Canadian Rockies nor the Canadian win ters At most he saw the CN Tower and Niagara Falls What did he learn Fred learned to make his own bed and to wash the dishes And he wore pair of blue jeans said Mrs Komar He ate pizza and listened to rock and roll groups such as the BachmanTurner Overdrive LIKEASON handled him as though he were my own son said Mr Komar Base Borden high school teacher who has three sons of his own He saw everyday social life here told him hed never be the same he said And Canadian students They learn the intangibles too Mrs Moriarity said They learn the school system is dif ferent that boygirl relation ships arc more formal and fatherson relationships even more so Most of all they team that communication with someone of different culture takes ef fort and understanding Mrs Moriarity said So International Student Ex change Program is an in valuablc experience And costly one But then so is any quality education It costs about $550 for students airfare ad ministration costs and in surancc and about $200 extra for spcnding moncy While some might think this could limit thc program to the upper middlc class parents Mrs Dunn doesnt think so Im singlc parent said Mix llunn mothcr of two boys and tcachcr at ur Lady of Grace School Angus think if you rcnlly want something bad enough you can get it she said And Mr Komar and Murray agree student with job can save money Mr Komar said Mrs Murray said if strident plans far enough mad he can sci asidc momy over period of time That way its not so had Mrs WEDDING
