Members met Monday night at the home of Ruth Dick for the monthly meeting Talking to children learning aid speech therapist tells UCW unit Practice makes perfect and that saying can be applied to children learning to talk ac cording to speech therapy teacher Marlene Thelen who this week addressed members of the Central United Church Women Friendship Unit Talk to your child all the time He needs lot of input before hell have proper out put Mrs Thelen told about 20 members who met at the home of Ruth Dick 26 Tower Cres Mrs Thelen was introduced by Eva Jean MacDonald Mrs Thelen visits eight schools in the area on regular basis to give remedial speech therapy These schools include Warnica Public Synnybrae Killamey Beach Goodfellow Innisfil Central King Edward Prince of Wales and Hillcrest She has her bachelor of arts and her specialist certificate in special education Speech development is an in tegrated part of total mental and physical development Mrs Thelen said Bone muscle and speech development co ordinate The basics steps toward speech include the birth cry breathing sucking swallowing and chewing and meaningful cries Later babbling and vocal play shows that history from the University of TorOnto 1933 honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from the University of Alberta 1967 University of Western Ontario 1974 Queens University 1974 University of Toronto 1975 She is member of the Senate of the University of Toronto and immediate past chairman of the board of gover nors of Womens College Hos pital Toronto She was officer of the Order of Canada in 1967 Her accomplishments in cluded being first woman to be chancellor of the University of Toronto first woman to be president of the University of Toronto Alumni Association first woman to be chairman of the board of governors of the National Theatre School of Canada and National Presi dent of Imperial Order of Daughters of the Empire 1963 1965 The Lieutenant Governor is participating member of the United Church of Canada and is married to Donald McGib bou vicepresident and trea surer of Imperial Oil Ltd Mrs Wilson was born and educated in Winnipeg and is married to Rev Dr Roy Wilson also of First United Church Hamilton Mrs Wilson was minister of Organized Ox ford United Church Winnipeg from its inception in 1953 associate minister First United Church Thunder Bay director of Town Talk Thunder Bay community wide education program using media in an innovative way to assist the community in setting its own goals and priorities Hamilton officer for the On tario Human Rights Commis sion and presently associate minister at First United Church Hamilton The Rev Lois Wilsons responsibilities include being chairman Education and Students Committee Hamilton Presbytery board Member of First Place board member of seniors TeleTouch daily telephone contact for isolated persons The community is invited to the service usually followed by imitative speech and finally vocabulary development By age six child has about 2562 word vocabulary He usually learns nouns verbs adjectives adverbs pronouns and then connective words OUTLINES TYPES Mrs Thelen outlined the types of speech problems Some problems are organic such as when the child has im paired hearing cerebral palsy or physical tongue tie There are also dental abnormalities causing lisping tongue thrust and improper swallowing About 75 per cent of the pro blems are functional articulacy problems she said That is the child simply speaks poorly because he has poor model These children can repeat properly the word say to them she said Stuttering or stammering and cluttered speech are con sidered grimarily psycho logical pro lems Frustration is common problem with stut terers Mr Thelen said In most cases the stutterer shouldnt be prompted when he is having difficulty Therapy varies she said Usually we discuss with the teacher and the parent what situations make the child stut ter she said Hearing problems often result in speech problems Mrs Thelen said Some hearing pro blems can result from allergies and chronic colds The child who is often most difficult to diagnose is the one with occasional hearing loss This child will leave of word endings in his speech or omit whole sounds Hearing problems in general are shown by poor attention span lack of interest in con versation poor comprehension and poor language develop ment Mrs Thelen stressed lair guage stimulation at an early age Let him hear you describe what you are doing even if its washing the dishes Let him know what sounds are such as dogs barking or Great Lakes region dating from 1540 and have been selected to show changing view of this area Scenes from Barrie in the 18705 will be on display during November at the Barrie Public Library Simcoe County Archives was formed in 1966 one of the first county archival dcpostories to be established in Ontario It col lects material related to the history of the county Letters newspapers journals maps photographs and official government documents are in cluded in the collection The archives building con sists of 3500 square feet of working space that is divided into reading room work shop and stack areas Most of the collection is stored in Holl inger boxes which are dust proof acidfree fire resistant and insect protected Special papers and envelopes made of neutral paper are used to wrap items
