Contrasts feature By MURIEL LEEPER silver flute shining trumpet and handsome tro phies are pictured in an in teresting ensemble to illustrate the Barrie Collegiate Bands 1975 album This last album cut by the wellknown band followin many successes at Kerkra Holland and the Toronto Kiwanis Music Festival is the first album pro duced with Morley Calvert as director The tworecord album suc ceeds in showing the technical and sometimes virtuoso ability of the young collegiate students It is marked by musical contrasts Festive Passacaglia and the Welsh Folk tune All Through the Night Reeds Festive Overture which concludes side one is bright stirring overture which brilliantly suggests gay fes tivities and rhythmic joy The competent musicians seem to enjoy the exciting rhythms and melodies Side three is the most in teresting and welldone section of the album Clifton Williams The Sinfonians which in troduces this side is written in articularly brilliant manner The score solos various in struments of the band and the composer manages to con tinuously hold the interest of the listener The middle piece Jubilance by Giovannini is well played but is written in way to sug gest film background music and tends to lose the listener An arrangement by Leidzen of Rachmaninoffs Italian Polka concludes side three in dashing rhythmical and very musical performance This melody could well be basrc theme for ballet The young performers give lilt and charm to the Rachmaninoff melody that makes the listener wish for repeat performance Side four consists of Tschaikowskys Finale for the The Barrie Examiner Friday Seetember 24 l9767A of album rangement Nestico of the Welsh Folk Song All Through theNight The Finale off the Minor on is course one thytinprrlilosty dramatic and bril liantlyorchestrated works of the Russian composer It is challenging work for students and one that is splendid for their studies Studying such composition gives music students indepth knowledge that can be gained in no other way However it would have been preferable to have featured more engaging com position for brass and wind in struments in this album Still the young students do give fairly accurate interpretation of the Tschaikowsky Master work The collegiate students per formance of the famous Welsh song is polished and musically quite beatuiful Calvert has sensitive approach to All Through the Night and has his students give an artistic inter retation This last was played by the collegiate band in Wales when they performed there as tribute to the hosts of the Inter national Festival of Youth Brass and Symphonic Bands Perhaps this wellloved song illustrates more than any other piece of the album the splendid coordination and finesse of the Barrie Collegiate Band Through many years the band has brought innumerable honors to this city Doubtless under the direction of Morley Calvert they will continue to do so He has perpetuated their in tense devotion despite regularly changing personnel and has also instilled in them the striving for perfection The album is one that many people of this city may not be aware of and may be obtained from any band member The overall performance is of fine standard technically and musically and tribute to director and students 1200 zzCanadian Cavalcade 000 zFun Factory 13 zMovie Guns of San 3mve It To Beaver 2110 of Our Lives
