penetrate through to the paste to soften it Scratch with any fairly sharp point But try not to gouge the plaster or dry wall underneath The more scratches you put on the faster and more completely you can do the soaking or steaming SPECKLED SlDlNG When pulled clinging vine off my whitepainted aluminum siding it left so many tiny root specks it looks like bad case of measles These are little soft sticky and wont brush off How can remove them without harming my paint or siding Those Spec are the re mains of roots still alive But not for long since their leaves and stems have been removed suggest your giving them time to die and shrivel up Then you can start brushing them off without running the risk of scratching your paint If youre in hurry speed things up by applying weed killer But do not guarantee this wont stain your paint Try on an obscure test area first CHEMICAL MELTS ROOTS am told there is chem ical which can dissolve tree roots which have grown into sewer pipe True True Called copper sul phate It wont dissolve serious matting of roots But once such mass is cut out Copper sulphate will dissolve any more roots trying to return Dissolve half pound down toilet last thing at night for three weeks during the growing season every two or three months other times Copper sul phate is widely sold in farm supply stores its used to con trol algae in farm ponds WIDE RANGE The Alaska Range extends generally northeastward from the base of the Alaska Penin sulato the frontier of the Yukon territory Book praises art collection By CHRIS YANEFF To art lovers the renowned McMichael Canadian Collec tion at Kleinburg Ont represents the most important period of Canadian art tribute to that collection has recently appeared in the form of book entitled Heri tage 0f Canadian Art Clarke Irwin and Co Ltd 106 pages $1595 with text by Paul Duval In some ways however the book comes as dis appointment It is described as an enlarged and revised edition of Vision Of Canada produced by Clarke Irwin in 1973 Anyone who has that original 1973 edition will undoubtedly be disappointed if he turns to Heritage Of Canadian Art on the assumption that it is new work on the subject Granted in this new edition there have been added 33 full color illustrations and more than 200 blackandwhite re ro ductions total of 126 an 076 respectivelybut new book it is not Tobe fair to book buyers the publisher ought to have retained the original title GROUP INFLUENCE On the positive side Heri tage 0f Canadian Art does con tain broad crosssection of the unique output of the Group of Seven To that has been added repre sentative works of associates and contemporaries of theirs plus in this edition greatly expanded representation of art produced by Canadian Indians and Inuit Students of art history will see the clear influence of the Art Nouveau movement that flourished just before World War It was an exhibition of Art Nouveau works by Scandina vian painters staged in Buf falo NY in 1913 that proved to be the catalyst for the Town tobased Group Some of the seven were com mercial artists and Saturday painters when the group trav elled the loo miles to Buffalo to see the new art from Europe They were profoundly in fluenced by the use of pure col ors as practised by Gustaf Fjaestad and Otto stelbom especially as well as the other Scandinavian artists rcprc sented in the exhibition NORTHERN MYSTIQLE It was only natural perhaps that Scandinaviaan area so similar to Canada in geographi cal termsshould provide the inspiration for school of art that has come to be regarded as quintessentially Canadian Like the Scandinavians the Group of Sevenand the other Canadians whom they were to influencefound their in spiration in Nature The por traits and the figure studies were for the most part left to the nomScandinavian Eu ropeans But whatever the Canadians may have lacked in sophis tication and originality they made up for in their talent for conveying to canvas the unique feeling of our northland Represented in the pages of Heritage Of Canadian Art are not only the Group Of Seven and their associate Edwin Hol gate but also such outstanding twentiethcentury Canadian artists as Clarence Gagnon Emily Carr Morrice Albert Robinson and David Milne as well as the Woodland Indians the West Coast Indians and the Inuit The excellent introductory comment that Paul Duval sup plied for Vision Of Canada in 1973 has unfortunately been cut down in this revised and en larged edition In the color reproductions much of the contrast has been lost and the variations in tone are disturbing Its regrettable since the en tire collection is contained in one easily accessible art gal lery that the publisher didnt take the extra time and effort required to coloneorrect each painting Whatever its faults however Heritage of Canadian Art be longs in any Canadian artbook collection that doesnt already contain Vision of Canada The illustrations the back biographies do provide an ex cellent introduction to the su perb McMichael Collection ground text and the individual And the price is reasonable Mr Yaneff Is an Ontario based graphic designer and art
