Examiner Staff Reporter What Will downtown Barrie tell city planning officials this week At 730 pm Thursday sub Peterborough Stratford and Victoria BC and hope to achieve similar results here on bayfront land which could be used for recreation and the whole core area firmly tied in Such an amendment would not be cureall Mr Green says we wont automatically price of rebuilding everyones store private investment is needed to renovate the city chants will renew their own faith he says But at present The chamber has plans to survey Barrie residents to find he says there is little reason out what the want to do with gage five 10 or 20 years from committee of planning board with the help of city council the with the bay have new downtown as soon core for merchant to improve his the all to day storekeepers having fled to suburban malls or gone bankrupt Qri will it be much the same as it is today spruced up bit if we are lucky abut more down attheheels if we are not The answer could depend in part on what Barrie residents organizations and businesses KEN BYLES council chamber at city hall to find out what role the people of Barrie want the core area to play in the future The meeting was called largely as result of approa ches to city hall by the Greater Barrie Chamber of Commerce whose civic affairs committee has been pressing for concrete steps toward downtown renewal CLEAR IDEA The committee headed by lawyer Marshall Green has clear idea of the kind of downtown it wants to see ro vided public support for eir ideas is forthcoming The committee wants to make dOWntown Barrie peo ple place where residents can do all their shopping find the necessary services get wide range of entertainment and make full use of the bay all within walking distance Earlier this year the chamber endorsed committee recommendation calling for an official plan amendment which Would designate the downtown core as the heart of the city and as the primary retail commercial cultural enter tainment institutional recrea tional and administrative cen tre for the City of Barrie The committee plans to have draft amendment implemen ting that policy statement ready before this weeks meet ing Committee members have been collecting information on successful downtown renewal projects in other cities notably other civic organizations Ideally the chamber would like to see downtown with wider sidewalks and narrower streets to accommodate fewer cars and more people build ings in harmony with one another instead of serving as slap in the face to one another in Mr Greens words parking in garages instead of The chamber regards an of ficial plan amendment as es sential to any form of real im provement downtown The cur rent official plan Mr Green charged earlier this year is paving the road to nowhere directing retail trade to upper Bayfield Street and waiting for Street merchants to perish by attrition But only such an amendment he says will show the sort of municipal commitment which will convince the provincial government through its new dowmown revitalization pro gram and other programs and private enterprise to invest money in downtown Barrie Sivce to work With developers to mutual advant age Council should also direct the city planning department long tied up with residential planning to spend more time working on the downtown area now that the urgency of resi dential work has eased GOOD AND bad blend in the heart of Barrie at the Five Points intersection of Dunlop Bayfield and Clap perton streets The cluttered intersection has long been the one of Oneway traffic on Dunlop downtown renewal along with yetunspecified addition to the area All are looking forward to Thursdays public meeting on the downtown areas future at which Barrie residents will have chance to voice their own views on the subject Mayor Parker says she would like to seek parking meters re moved from Dunlop Street and shoppers directed to offstreet locations where longer parking terms could help eliminate the parking tickets which she says do more than anything else to drive people out of the core area Traffic on Dunlop she says could be restricted to productivity higher morale and just generally live lier employees Ervin said mayors suggestions you have Mayor Dorian Parkers vision of better Dunlop Street The Greater have done and in particular she would like to see improve ments to the store backs which face Kempenfelt Bay Robinson Hardware she says is one ex ample of how this can be done its just as attractive when you go out the back door
