ifs av nadir I7 POINTS TO PONDER MINESING UNITED CHURCH One source of energy that is neglected By DOROTHY KILRLRN We hear so much about todays energy crisis We are constantly warned about future shortages which would cause setback in our nations produc tivity But right now the energy is there and we continue to use it sometimes excessively But there is one source of energy that is sadly neglected in our lives spiritual energy which would provide us with peace of heart and mind and power to live fruitful Christian lives That energy is prayer One night recently there were only 12 persons at our prayer meeting at Wasaga wBeach but it was one of the most beautiful powerful prayer meetings that have at tended Driving in my car to the prayer meeting reminded the Lord that was not going to meet with people or to hear the pastor was going to meet Him And He was there As one af ter another poured out their heart to Him in audible prayer realization of the victory over evil that loving Heavenly Father had procured for us crept into my heart And as has happened more times than can number arose from my feet refreshed encouraged and confident that those prayers would be answered Prayer is the trysting place of friends forgiven sinner and loving God It is trysting place where if we are willing to be honest with God sweet peace steals into the heart and new vital courage grips ones inner spirit HELP At the close of the meeting our vourg pastor Rev Bob Gates prayed that his congregation would look up from the burdens of life to the blessings that re ours because Christ loves us Prayer is tremendous help to the upward look at the blessings obtained for us by Jesus Christ Forgiveness of sins even am He that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake and will not remember thy sins Gods protecting care Casting all your care upon him for he careth for you Eternal safety In my Fathers house are many inan sions if it were not so would have told you go to prepare place for you And if go and prepare place for you will come again aiirl receive you uu to myself that where am there ye may be also Deodorant plan helps river lose its smell DUBLIN iRcuteri Efforts River Lilfey per sonified as woman by James oncc in his novel Finnegans Wake and symbol of home to generations of Dubliners The Littey outlet to the sea is where the Vikings established their the modern capital city into halves and Dubliners observe sharp distinction between those who reside north or south of the Lif fev For as long as any Dubliner can remember the Liffey has made its presence feltcspccially at low tide and in warm weatherw by rich and pungent odor that pervades the central city area REACTIONS MIXED The familiar whiff of the Lif fey has always been at the same time an assault on the nostrils and tug on the stringsof Irish travellers It arises from combination of sewage and industrial ef fluent of which the river has had to hear an increasing load in recent years Whatever its nostalgic at traction and literary fame the odor can at times be offensive even to the native Dubliner For several years the city corporation has pushed forward drainage plan which when completed in couple of years will divert all sewage away from the Liffey through new tunnels to the sea At the same time physical cleaning ofnthe river bed with heavy mach inery takes place when very low tides permit Now an industrial firm has begun experiments in co operation with the citys port authority to determine whe ther pumping gaseous oxygen Saving native tongue SABIIAL MOR OSIAIG well as acting as social centre is not only vailable to the Scottish natives With the beautiful setting of the Isle of Skye as an added bonus it has attracted grow ing interest from places as far apart as Nova Scotia New Mexico West Germany the Netherlands and Norway One enthusiastic visitor student from Nova Scotia was so impressed when he came last year that he is back this summer bringing five friends with him into the river will restore its power to break down organic matter and thus eliminate the smell Studies naked chickens BATON ROUGE La AP Naked chickens get ciiibar rassed Their sex lives arent much to crow about They get suit burned and they catch cold when temperatures drop Dr William Johnson is an we pert on naked chickens He has been studying them for about four years ever since his research associate Dr Robert Iruax found one in newly hatched brood in the poultry science department at Lotti siana State University About three weeks later they found another barely feather on it and decided We have to fian outwhats causingthis Johnson said he hasnt found out yet but he has learned lot about naked chickens For instance he has learned that they apparently have no commercial value They have to be kept indoors to protect them from sunburn and thermostat turns on heater when temperatures get below 75 degrees to keep them from catching cold GROWTH IIAMIICREI Because they have no feathers they lose body heat and have to use much of their feed to keep warm rather than for growing Johnson said They werent bred to eliminate plucking because they have few deformed tiny feathers that must be hand plucked Wc showed them to couple of commercial people and they just laughed the same as do Aside from the physical pro blems the chickens have social problems and psychological hangups Johnson said guess embarrassed is as good word for it as any You put one of them in with flock of normal birds and it huddles off in corner by itself The other birds wont have anything to do with it until they get used toit And then theyre just not as active sexually They will court and strut much more than the normal bird but they dont mate as readily Where normal bird will strut hell interrupt it and mate at the first sign that the female is even halfway iii terested naked bird will just keepon strutting Will conduct church meetings Bruce Scott former Canadian of individuals STROUD LEFROY UNITED CHURCH The most common argument raised against the existence of God and against religious view of life is the one that says If there won God who is allloving and allpowerful he would have mode perfect world Everyone would be happy There wouldnt be any war and hatred No one would suffer frori disease There wouldnt be earthquakes and iornodos and floods But it isnt perfect world and these evils do exist And so many people conclude that there cannot be God or if there is they sure dont want to know him Better to believe that everything that happens here is just the result of blind chance Well to take that position you have to make very big assumption You have to assume that the only reason we have been put here is to live in pleasurefilled paradise where all we have to do is to enjoy ourselves But read what John Hick Cambridge University philosopher says in Evil and the God of Love Those who use the problem of evil as an argument against belief in God almost invariably think of Gods relation to the world on the model of human being building cage for pet onimol If he is humane he will naturally make his pets quarters is pleasant and healthful as he can Any respect in which the cage falls short of the ideal and contains possibilities of ac crdent or disease is evidence of either limited benevolence or limited means or corn But this view completely misreads Gods purpose and his attitude toward humanity Hick says Men are not to be thought of on the analogy of animal pets whose life is to be made as agreeable as possrble but rather on the analogy of human children who are to grow to adulthood in on environment whose primary and overriding purpose is not immediate pleasure but the realizing of the most valuable potentialities of human personality Does realizing the potentialities of human personality have to be such troublesome thing It seems so In the Bible the people who stand tall arent the automatically good ones but those who have sweated through temptations who have made responsible decisions in dif ficult situations Certainly trouble and suffering do contribute to growth of human potential Men and women are often the most generous and concerned when they see others in trouble It is hard to see how courage could emerge except in world where there is danger or how compassion could be called forth without the reality of pain Are you really sure that perfect that is troublefree world would point people to belief in God Isnt it rather that in the midst of trouble and suffering we discover that he is indeed present with us God of love who helps us if well let him to become our best selves Rev Geo James Stroud and Lefroy United Church GRACE Grove St East at Cook St Minister Rev Arthur Storey l0000m
