ca4s flrw Soaring tax spending is assailed by Rynard By DR RYNARD MP Simcoe North Governments keep on spen ding while preaching restraint We have good illustration of this fact in the city of Orillia Some eight years ago the department of Indian affairs established an office in Orillia to serve the Georgian Bay area This was done with the sole pur pose of saving money and bringing more and more Ill dians into contact with the departments programs and ad vice on how to improve their situation The idea was working out well apparently par ticularly in the field of sports Leonard Self Presbyterian minister who worked with the Department of Indian affairs as an education counsellor developed the sports pmgraiii especially in hockey when an annual tournament was held resulting in an increase in the number of people particitxiting and more contact with the various Indian Reserves The discipline required in hockey developed the character of the youngsters involved Mr Selfs position however was finally taken over by the Indians them selves KINGSTON OFFICE When the district office was set up in Orillia an office was also set up in Kingston to cover the Eastern area Ap proximately 18 people were people three floors in an office building The work was done successfully and there were no complaints registered When first heard that changes were being made in our area the minister informed me that the status quo was remaining the same and no changes were being made again called the ministers of fice and was informed that Mr Bennett of the Kingston office was to be in charge At that time was also told that the minister did not know about the changes because they were being made below the ministerial level The changes pmposed were to open new of ice in Icterlxnough few years earlier an off ice had been closed there because it was not needed However new office space will now be rented in Peterborough and Mr Bennett will be in charge Mr Gover who has been in charge of the Orillia office is to move to Peterborough and will be working under Mr Bennett THREE OFFICES NOW We then have an example of the great expense involved in the renting of three separate of fices and the cost of tran sferring and moving of the involved in re establishment When questioned these affairs was told that there would be only six ple leaving the Orillia of icefour people were to go to working in Orillia and occupied Peterhorough and two clerical persons would be laid off The reasons offered me were simply that the Indians wanted to take over more themselves which is all to the good However the department is now going to hire high paid engineers and ac countants to assist them would hope that one engineer would be hired when in my opinion only half an engineer could give the Indians all the help required EMPIRE BUILDING The minister obviously did not know what was going on The department was establishing another office and this is commonly known as em pire building They were also hiring high echelon employees at high rates of pay This is an illustration of how governments cost us money while advocating restraint Industry can only increase wages by eight per cent whereas government can go on spending blindly It is typical example of how government is running this country It is also an example of why we are in trouble financially The deficit this year will be close to five billion dollars The interest on the national debt is ap proximately four billion dollars and of course this has to be paid by the people who work and are productive This runs at approximately around five dollars per capita or two dollars per working day to the working force NEW LOWELL NEWS By BElLAII TOMPKINS Mr and Mrs Brian Bam brough and family spent the weekend with Mrs Noble in Indian site ANGUS Located just off the new mountain road approx imately fivesix miles from the TOWn of Collingwood is the Petun Conservation Area formerly known as the Osler Bluffs This land was purchased in 1975 by the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority with the aid of the ministry of natural resources and the Bruce Trail Association The name has been changed from Osler Bluffs Conservation Area to the Petun Conservation Area in an effort to avoid confu sion for the public with other similarlynamed places in the vicinity ie Osler Bluff Ski Club and also for historical significance In the 15th and 16th centuries group of Iroquois tabacco In dians called the Petuns in habited this area In fact it is believed that an Indian village once existed within mile of the conservation area There is evidence of this compact through archaeological fin dings and by records kept by the early Jesuits well Petun is beautiful conserva tion area with the Bluffs caves where one can find snow year round natural springs and it is also the source area of the Black Ash creek By providing additional facilites and activities the area has great potential for com plimenting thOSe
