from sugar when prices soared couple of years ago are seeing sweeter pic ture these days The cost of sugar one of the most expensive staples in the pantry since 1974 dropped sharply in August to its lowest level since 1973 survey by The Canadian Press shows that sugar prices dropped in nine of the 12 sur veyed cities last month Melville Davidson president of the Canadian Sugar Institute in Toronto said the lower prices are result of world surplus of sugar cane In late 1974 fivepound bags of sugar cost as much as $3 and while the cost levelled off early 1975 prices began to slide in late 1975 and early 1978 However spokesman for both the Baker Council of Canada and the Confectioners Associ ation of Canada declined to say if the cost of their products would decline because of the re duction in the price of sugar Douglas Heagle president of the Bakery Council said you dont simply look at the cost of ingredients in bakery prod ucts he said You have other costs such as energy labor and it becomes balancing act In other words we have many more hidden costs to consider than say four or five years ago COCOA MARKET LIMBS Philip Moyes general man ager of the Confection Manufacturers said sugar prices may be down but what is really worriesome to the in dustry now is the climbing cocoa market The survey of the monthly food basket is conducted in the same supermarkets in each of 12
