SPORTS CORNER Cyclists in Summer Games By nANiiv McDoNALl Examiner Sports Editor The news that they had qualified for the 1976 Ontario Winter Games came as surprise to two area cyclists and their coach David and father coach Jtirgeii Breiding of Painswick along with David Jardine of Barrie first learned they were eligible when contacted by an Examiner sports writer Monday The trio will be in the IIEthlLtilltIOn region Sept 46 for the annual Summer Games Jardine was the first to learn they had qualified when tracked down Monday after list of athletes going to the 76 Games was made available by the Games Headquarters Its surprise to me said the itiyearltold cyclist didnt even know abotit it Coach Breiding was also unaware of the selection He said they had made application to attend the Games but had still not received word they were going The three were out last night for an easy ride of some 24 miles after competing in Hamilton road race over the weekend Jardine 16 is the newcomer having just completed his se cond month of cycling The younger Breidiiig 15 has three years and some 4000 miles of training and competitions under wheels It was Breiding who just missed pileup in Hamilton to go on to pick up firstplace medal his first of the season The cyclists have been working out most mornings on country roads Their weekend activities earned them break last night but its not uncommon to have 40 miles of hard pavement pass under the wheels in session sometimes as many as 60 miles Breiding is coach with the llnronia Bicycle lub which is now two years old Its carry over of former club the Bar rie Bicycle lub which met with limited success He says the pair of Davids are coming along just fine nach Breiding talked at length about the conditioning necessary for cyclist at least competitive cyclist and the fact that much more than sheer muscle is needed Its quite scientific he said We wouldnt even think of competing without at least 1000 miles of training Some cyclists need more some as much as 5000 miles of roadwork before they feel ready for competition The Barrie Bicycle tlub makes use of the expertise of verteran riders as Ed Harper of Barrie Breiding alluded cycling to Cinderella Sportlle said its popularity has started to perk tip and people are now taking notice But he still remembers those early years when cyclist was an open target on the road Now you get some consideration from motorists he pointed out Breiding remembers an incident two years ago when he was cycling and car pulled tip beside him suddenly this gun poked otit the window and they discharged it they were haw ing great fun Jardine however still bears the marks of an accident two weeks ago He says he was out for practice session when car turned in front of him She decided to turn corner he remembers He also recalls the collapsed front wheel torn knee and ruined boots What really upset the student at Barrie entral Collegiate was the fact that the driver never bothered to stop bus driver had to go after her to get her to stop Still Iardine was glad that there was no more damage done Both his and the bike owned by David Breiding cost around $700 each Its serious sport calling for serious investment Coach Brciding is confident the club will work out In talking of the clubs future he says simply If you dont start at the bottom at the foundation we wont be able to develop anything at the top The Summer Games competition is divided into time trials road races criteritini and track event He says the two qualifiers are pretty serious about the tip coming provincial championships Its still not all peaches and cream There are times when feel like mother hen with brood of chicks Sometimes have to get them out of bed and haul them over to my house for breakfast before we start working Breiding talks of another club member 77 Jeff Mauch This fellow has been more or less under my umbrella and Ed Harpers umbrella for four years he says He picked tip sixth in Hamilton but he was outsprinting other guys selected for the championships Were very proud of this guy says Breiding The sport of lawn bowling will celebrate its second ap pearance at the
