may 8The Barrie Examiner Tuesday August 10 I976 SPORTS CORNER Blown engine cools advance By RANDY MCDONALD Examiner Sports Editor Dennis Wharton and Ray Gregg of the Twin Lakes Motor Club were among the harder hit at Saturdays Diamond Rally in the AllistonNorth Dufferin region The Barrie drivers were the surprise of the first round of the Molsons Autosport rally cham ionship seriesthe Madawaskawith first in class an sixth overall finish against some of the top rally teams of the province and Quebec It was the first stage event for driver Wharton and his decisive win earned him 20 points and the early lead in the rookie driver of the year points race Wharton and Gregg were one of two Barrie teams which did not make it to the end of the gruelling 125mile course along twisty sandy county roads At the ninth stage head gasket blew and the team was out of the running at least for the day The other Barrie team which did not finish was that of Bob Garside and Pavel Heina Their Toyota tore fender enroute and the time lost was more than could be made up forcing the duo to drop out of the round Driver Milo Forstyl and codriver Gary Murakami of Barrie finished eighth and now stand fifth overa with 11 points Randy Black and Doug Mepham of Don Mills in Datsun took over the lead from first round leader Walter Boyce and Victor Wejer with their win Saturday Boyce was unable to attend the rally due to committments with the Toyota factory team in New Brunswick where he is reported doing testing Another Don Mills team finished second full 18 seconds behind the leaders Reima Hasanen and Brian Hillis moved into third spot in the overall standings with their placing Driver Gary Neil and Don Ramsay of Rexdale finished third and the points earned placed them fourth overall after the two rounds Two Scarborough teams finsihed fourth and fifth Bryan Cook and Russ Watson wheeled their Dodge Colt around the course ahead of Les Taylors and Stan Pollocks Datsun team of the Twin Lakes Club Janusz Wlodarczyk and Dave Deaville of Rexdale placed sixth Another Toyota team of Bjorn Anderson and Brian Jackson from London Ont was sevent Forstyl and Murakanii had been fourth in the overall points race heading into Saturdays round The course claimed its share of entries At least 10 of the 41 cars which left the Nottawasaga Inn east of Alliston Saturday afternoon were so badly damaged they couldnt get back on the road or finish the course ovdriver Gregg was found working over his car last night at Simcoc Datstiii Its brand new engine he mused As matter of fact didnt get any sleep on Friday night We were tip all night pitt tiiig it together Gregg said the only miles on the engine where just those it took to drive to the rally We were really pushing our luck trying to get an engine that was that new to perform like it was We didnt give it any breakdn at all we just took it out and pushed it right away and as result it let us down Gregg and driver harton did spin off the course at par ticular nasty comer looked after by members of the Twin Lakes club It was at this particular stage that the Kincardine team of Steve Watkins and Bill Hirst had their flashy Toyota do number of overend rolls Spectators pulled the drivers out and reported nothing more serious than both men little shook up and some minor cuts and bruises That corner in rticular was bad remembers Gregg The fellows pushed us back on the road said it wasnt the car theyd helped get going again Both Garside and Gregg thought it was good course The knock given Garsides and Hejnas Toyota was severe enought to knock them minute off the pace And minute ex tra says Garside puts you clean out of the running Its good course designed for people who want experience in this ty of event before moving up to the top class in the coun try ad ed Garside It represents smaller version of the big events The selectives were fairly short the longest one was just lit tle over two miles said Greg They dont really give you much of chance to get rolling btit theyre fairly close together so itss quie nice Gregg thought few were little rough and some very very fast The idea is to have mixup of the roads You dont want them all the same becuase then there are types of drivers who would have an advantage You want course little rough little smooth twisty and fastmix it upa little The next round of the rally series is in Ottawa early in September Rain cuts short Midland slalom The Twin Lakes Motor Clubs Georgian Bay Slalom at the Zellers parking lot in Midland was held under threatening skies Sunday and was in fact rtiall washed out by rain atcr in thc afternoon Compctitors managed to get only the minimum three runs in before having in qiiit dtie to the wet and slippery course Class APreparcd was won
