waiting room ltlllfl IN 19th The station building of massive construction with huge overhanging eaves and painted red with cream trim was built in about loot as the iriginal station building as far as lerrifield can ascertain Most interesting are the train order hoops with which the sta tionmaster hands teletyped dispatches directly to the train engineer who put his artn through the hoop as he goes through The hoop is long stick six or eight feet long with the end bent round into hoop with wire clip to hold the paper train order The engineer takes the order out and tosses the stick back onto the trackside Recently the hoop has been replaced with wide head like big catapult with binder twine strung around the and across the top so that as soon as the elliineel outs hilt rm through it the string and at tached message slips off the stick wheich never leaves the stationmasters hands The result no more messages or broken sticks In 24 hours up to 20 freight trainsand two passenger trains lost and Simeoe itoresters militia regiment an infantry unit of the anadian Armed Forces which traces its history back to ltititi The members of regiment which has the its pass through Alliston Canadian Pacific station There is one up and one down passenger train every day The ticket office and its familiar ironwork grill is closed now and tickets are bought right on the train from the con ductor The station is still in regular use as passenger of fice large part of the freight handled consists of potatoes and agricultural products in coming and outgoing as well as considerable amount of in dustrial commodities RANGE IN SIZE Locomotives used on the Alliston line range from 1500 horsepower to 3600 horsepower The normal passenger train has one 1700 horsepower engine Heavier engines of 2400 to 3300 lvnsepower are used on the freights Merrifield notes that three locomotives or heads are used on the average freight train and he has seen as many as four heads tup to 10000 horsepower on freights up to 7000 feet long In what is known as power transfer where heavier loads are going in one direction than the other so that more engines end up at one end than the other train with as many as seven locomotives might be seen We speak of diesel ltxomotive explains Mer nfield but what we really mean is dieselelectric The diesel motors do not drive the locomotive they simply drive generators to produce electrici ty which in turn drives big elec tric traction motors on the wheel axles Four to six are the usual number of axles on any given locomotive Eightaxle jobs have not proved out too well in the states HERESIIIZCONIES Here she comes somebody shouted Sure enough with growing rumble and thunder the big orange locomotive and string of modern passenger cars in cluding sortie with observation domes came rolling around the bend headlight blazing siren blasting beware signal and the Victoria Street crossing wigwags ringing urgentlv headquarters in Owen Sound are respirator or 9513 task As the engine and first cars swept past slowing for stop that would leave the centre pickup passenger cars opposite the station Merrifield raised the train order hoop to level with the oncoming locomotive cab the engineer reached out hand extended forward and faster than the eye could follow snagged the string and train order on his arm In dark navy uniforms the conductors stepped to the plat form and with good old fashioned chivalry escorted the passengers from Alliston onto the train Half minute later with along blast of the siren the train with surging roar hurried off down the tracks to Toronto LARGE COLLECTION Back inside Merrifield show ed us part of his train picture collection This includes photos he himself has taken of Cana dian Pacific dieselelectric Landers Walters way is acceptable Dear Ann Landers Have you noticed how many people including those in radio and TV pronounce February as Febyooary Walter Cronkite no less is one of the prinCIpal offenders will be mighty glad when these socalled experts on the English language get with it Ive written to Cronkite to protest such sloppy usage but so far no reply How about you trying February Freak Dear Feb sent your letter to Walter Cronkite who 1n cidentally is real pussycat Across the top of your letter wrote Dear Walter The lady is right heard you say it Please clean up your act or get off the air Walter Cronkite telephoned his response He let me know in no uncertain terms that his act doesnt need cleaning up Moreover he said he has no intention of getting off the air Cronkite says the dictionaries are divided as to the pronoun ciation of February checked several reference books however and they all give Febyoosary as second choice See World Book Dic tionary Merriam Websters New Collegiate Funk and Wag nalls American Heritage and Random House One of them even has Febyooary as third choice So Feb rooary is preferred but Febyooary is acceptable and thats the way it is Monday that has been painted over with shellac or varnish We have tried to polish the brass but cannot remove the covering over it Can you suggest way to clean and preserve the brass CF DEAR CF You have to remove the coating on your bed before trying to polish it am presuming this is real brass bed not plated since you say it Is antique Paint thinner or even turpentine might remove it Experiment on an inconspicuous place The ideal way would be to take it to professional brass cleaner and polisher It would be well worth the cost if your bed is real antique To do it yourself wash brass with soapy water and as you dry it let your hands touch the brass as little as possible Apply denatured alcohol to all the brass surface and let dry before spraying on transpar ent colorless metal lacquer Then wipe off with soft cloth That will be all that is necessary for quite some time When lacquer shows signs of wearing off remove with alcohol repolish with brass polish if need be and then relacquer POLLY DEAR POLLY My Pet Peeve is with the lax service one receives in some of the large department stores One has to find the place in the store where the cashier is and then stand in line for 15 or 20 minutes The stores cry about all the shoplifting and am not surprised since there are so few salespeople about Often have wanted to try on some dresses and there was no one around to even show me the way to the dressing room GERIRUDE DEAR POLLY My husband is construction worker and is often laid off during the winter when our bills are the highest To compensate for this try to keep several month supply of staples food and cleansers on hand and never buy any of these items except when they are on sale Over years time this makes for big savings If money gets tight we spend week or more using up things on hand and not making any major purchases The same principle is used for buying home furnishings and clothing hope to win one of your clippers so can more easily cut out more coupons and thus do some additional saving DV DEAR POLLY find dental floss is excellent for sewing on buttons It does not wear out or break as quickly as ordinary thread EVA
