Election discussed The possibility of an upcom ing election either federal or provincial was the topic of discussion at meeting of the Vospra Progressive Conser vative Association Friday George Taylor MPP for Sim coe Centre said he was not sure if provincial election was im minent as he could not predict how the NDP would vote on the Liberal motion of non confidence which Stuart Smith has stated he will put forward He suggested however that the NDP do not want an elec tion as their leader Micheal Cassidy has not had time to become wellknown to the voting public Ron Stewart Progressive Conservative candidate for Simcoe South could not suggest date for an upcoming federal election but stated that in the expected election this year Prime Minister Trudeau will campaign on the issue of na tional unity which Stewart 30 cused the Liberals as using as smokescreen all along The smokescreen said Stewart is to distract the voters from examining an inef fectiveness on the part of the Liberals to handle the economy properly Stewart also expressed faith in Joe Clark leader of the Pro gessive Conservatives and rderring to comments by the press and opposition about the man said if anyone asks Joe who tell him who Joe is Hes leader He can make Canada work again The meetings business was completed with an election of new officers Mel Petch was ac claimed as president Art Van statement from his office issued recently Stevens accused the Trudeau government of abandoning in flation targets at recrod rate According to Stevens in Oc tober 1975 the finance minister forecasted that the inflation rate would fall to four per cent by October 1978 but this target was abandoned in October 1977 when the new finance minister Jean Chretien said that the inflation rate would average six per cent in 1978 This latter target said Stevens was abandoned in early 1978 when both the prime minister and finance minister said infla tion might reach six per cent by the end of the year The April 10 budget stated Stevens offers yet another forecast of inflation higher than any of the previous forecasts the examiner MondayAprll24 1978 According to Finance Minister Chretiens latest forecast for 1978 the increase in the consumer price index is likely to be about seven per cent How long this forecast will last is not clear most private sector forecasters expect somewhat higher inflation in 1978 For many Canadians said Stevens seven per cent infla tion means lower standard of living With wage increases limited to six per cent by wage controls prices will rise faster than wages Stevens also stated that Canada has not achieved its potential for economic growth since 1974 and with reference to the na tional deficit commented that the financial accounts of the government of Canada have been out of control for some time and Shelley Macdonald was second to the title All three girls could nof hold back the tears when the judges announced their decision Examiner Photo
