Blue Jays pitcher Jerry Garvin th hibition Stadium and it was promptly banged out of the park by Detroit Tiger leadoff hitter Ron Laflore Jays nip Tigers 108 in chilly home opener Jays fans the examiner Saturday Aprll15 1918 By SCOTT IIASKINS Examiner Sports Editor TORONTO It Fridays homeopener of the Toronto Blue Jays is any indication of things to come Exhibition Stadium is going to be popular place for Toronto baseball fanatics in 1978 The visiting Detroit Tigers and Blue Jays forgot about the cold winds and odd snow flurry long enough to belt 24 hits Friday Jays finally won the slugfest 108 thanks mainly to sixrun uprising in the sixth inning when they sent 10 batters to the plate The game was surprisingly similar to last years home opening 95 win over the Chicago White Sox The only thing missing was the white stuff Playing baseball in Toronto in April is like swimming in Lake Ontario in Januaryfivery risky If it hadnt been for the excitement of the game which gave the spectators chance to get up and cheer and restore the feeling in their toes Toronto hospitals might very well have been overrun by cases of frostbite IT WAS COLD The temperature at game time was No one can do anything about the weather so theres no sense complaining about it Roy Hartsfield skipper of the Toronto club said after the game It the weather is the same for every player so the team that makes the adjustment usually comes out on top The Tigers made the adiustment first but Hartsfields theory fell through when the Jays battled back to win the game Ron Leflorc Tigers allstar centrefielder gave Blue Jay pitcher Jerry Garvin taste of what its all about when he sent his first delivery high over the 400 foot sign in centre field Garvin got Lou Whitaker to ground out but walk to Rusty Staub and towering home run by Jason Thompson gave Tigers 30 lead before many of the spectators had even settled in their seats In the clubhouse after the game Hartsfield was asked how he felt after the first inning felt Id put in full days work he laughed certainly thought it was going to be long day but was confident the way we were swinging the bat Jays got their act together in the bottom of the inning and scored two runs to get right back into the game BOSETTI LEI OFF Rookie Rick Bosetti belted Jim Slatons first pitch for double and scored on single by Roy Howell Tommy Hutton then doubled to knock in Howell Last year Doug Ault was the instant hero He belted two home runs in his first two major league at bats This year Howell stole the spotlight and went fourforfive at the plate knocking in three runs and scoring three others Howell the clubs regular third baseman played left field in the opener and he said he still hasnt mastered the new position up on giant new $25 miili ed however as they went on Photo rew the first i978 pitch in Ex he run was promptly lit COME SEE THE lEASING PEOPLE long tom loosing on oil nickel MOUOII of con and trucks strange TORONTO Staff Toronto sports fans have always been known as strange lot but the Toronto Blue Jay supporters are starting to carry the tradition to new heights Last year the Jays launched their inaugdral major league campaign by outlasting snowstorm and the Chicago White Sox 95 before crowd of 44649 This year the script was strangely Similar crowd of 35761 showed up wearing everything from snowmobile suits to six layers of blankets to ward off the odd snow flurry and wold winds which dropped the temperature to at game time For the second year in row Jays didnt disappoint the dedicated fans as they beat the newlook Detroit Tigers M8 in game that lasted two hours and 57 minutes Toronto fans are indeed dedicated The National Hockey Leagues Maple Leafs havent won the Stanley up for years and the anadian Football Leagues Toronto Argonauts havent won the flaty Tup since Moses was even though he played few games there with the Texas Rangers in 1974 dont really like it out there There arent any bases Howell said after the game You have to keep your con centration on every pitch because you have to make sure you cover up for the infield or the guy playing beside you Howell was his own modest self when referring to his fine day at me plate The pitcher throws it and just try and wait for my pitch he added Sometimes you get lucky and everything falls in but other times you can really pound it but it goes right at someone NO SWEATER Howell was one of the few players who refused to wear long sleeve sweater under his regular sweater He joined the club midway through last year so he didnt have to put up with the cold weather It was awaful cold out there but no one can do anything about it he said dont like wearing sweater It hampers my play All the guys are staying away from me he laughed They all think Im kind of crazy Last year many of the fans started leaving after the third inning By the ninth inning of Fridays game most of the fans were still glued to their seats waiting to see what strange event would happen next If 24 hits and 18 runs doesnt excite you nothing will Every Jay except Dave McKay the clubs token Canadian reached base in the game and both clubs sent four pitchers to the mound Jays sent Garvin Baylor Moore Don Kirkwood and Tom Murphy to the mound while Detroit countered with Slaton Tim Wilcox John Hiller and Bruce Taylor The only pitcher to have any measure of success was Kirk wood The tall righthander shut the Tigers out four innings and then gave way to Murphy in the top of the ninth Kirkwood picked up from the White Sox earlier in the week was rewarded with the win Wilcox who was tagged for five runs took the loss Bob Bailor last years most valuable player for the club Howell Hutton and Gomez were the main ingredients in Jays Sixrun uprising in the Sixth inning All four players ctouted Singles and Bosetti Howell banor John Mayberry Hutton and Alan Ashby all scored runs Tigers helped out Jays by committing two errors in the in ning Whitaker booted ball hit by Bosetti and then the usually surehanded Leflorc let ball get away from him in centre field and it rolled to the fence scoring two runs After that Jays settled down and let Kirkwood earn his salary Today in another 130 pm start Jays will send their other lefthanded started Tom Underwood 01 against Jack Billingham Hi while Jim Clancy goes against Dave Rozema in the series finale
