orange curtain across valley in Rifle Colo Jan van der Marck was project director When the same artist wrapped up the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art it was van der Marck who as director of the museum at the time gave him the goahead and encouragement Van der Marck director of the art exhibit at the Seattle Worlds Fair in 1962 and curator or director for number of art institutions in this country was this last summer member of the international committee in charge of Documenta VI Documenta is an international art show held every four years in Kassel Germany The Hollandborn van der Marck is now director of the Dartmouth College Hanover Museum and Galleries and adjunct professor of art What is happening in art in 1978 he said in an interview is diversification plurality coexistence of values At the same time he said there is not the indigenous creativity of the 1960s when styles as minimalism which has as its spirit the least the basics simple configuration pop art op art and photo realism were developing What we are doing now he said is cannibalizing our recent past and enjoying it We are in period of retrospection weighing and judging The art of the 605 he said has survived in two general trends of the 705 the minimalism as seen in giant outdoor sculptures or in some conceptual art and what is generally termed post minimalism which he describes as and the man in the dark glasses his vaguely sinister shirt and pants as black as his blowndry hair is recounting the days when he really was hit man When everything he sang turned to gold records When he was bigger than the Beatles and Elvis and Peter Frampton Hes telling you about how it was in 63 when they wouldnt let him off stage until hed done 14 encores and John Lennon and Paul McCartney grabbed him in the wings and told him facetiously Yankee go home That he said is off the record dont want to sound likelm braggin Roy Orbison need never brag Nor need he apologize for being Roy Orbison comfortably mature hes 41 rock singer who has been known to do with his voice what Elvis could with his hips Hes out of the mainstream now no longer cranking out gold records But hes touring hitting many of the cities he bypassed in the 605 when he was as they say in the business hot When was starting out he said would do one of my own songs and 25 minutes of other artists material and the star on the bill would do all his hits said thats for me Its always been my desire to do complete show of my hit records dont believe people come to hear me try new material try to maintain my integrity Ive never tried to promote new song or new record on tour But Ive had hit somewhere in the world at all times Indeed since appearing with the Beatles in England his popularity in Europe has been greater than in the United And the interest on States compilation of his hits topped the British charts last year and in or 69 was voted the No artist in Europe Still it has been long time since Cry Softly his last record to hit the charts here It was 68 or 69 he said Does the drought bother him Only my pride dont need the hits got over that many years ago when had about 27 in row After 15 it doesnt matter so much When take the time to write more Ill be able to sell more dont think Ive reached my peak et either in making hit recor or performing The fact remains though that new generation
