Sports Editor The Huronia Winter Games may be dead With the death of the Greater Huronia Sports Council the Winter Games may not take place again next year Hopefully the games will be held despite the loss of their governing body The Games have proven to be successful and have brought competitors from the region together not only to compete but to get to know each other The two events held this past weekend in Barrie were overwhelming successes The gymnastics tournament at Barrie Central Collegiate had the biggest turnout ever with over 200 aspiring gymnasts taking part The volleyball tournament also held at Central was also success The competition in the volleyball tournament was unique because it had high school teams and teams from the Simcoe County Womens Recreation Volleyball League competing together Whats up Obviously there was an age difference but the calibre of the teams were even The women from the Simcoe County league put up good fight and eventually defeated their younger rivals But they did not win without battle Collingwood Msti ques had to play three games to defeat Penetanguishene Secondary School in the finals and the deciding game ended with Collingwood winning 1917 team has to score 15 points to win but they must also win by two points Other events in the Winter Games have not been as suc cessful with competitors from only the immediate area in which they are being held competing The Games have been successful this winter des ite some of the setbacks Let us hope the games continue ey are worthwhile WINTER CARNIVAL TOURNAMENT The Barrie Winter Carnival Hockey Touranment will be the biggest it has ever been this year There will be 48 teams competing with only four from Barrie Local teams competing are John Ellis Construction Minor Atoms Cardinal Cash and Carry Minor Peewees Civitan Minor Bantams and Bell Canada Minor Midgets Teams will be coming from Hamilton Burlington Ajax Brampton Peterborough Kitchener Belleville Waterloo Welland Guelph Bramalea St Catharines Brantford Kingston Niagara Falls Fort Erie Ottawa and Chinguacousy The tournament will last three days beginning on Friday morning and will continue until late Sunday afrernoon when the championship games will be held at the Barrie Arena The Eastview Arena Barrie Arena and the Essa Township Community Centre in Angus will be used in the tournament Tournament organizers say the tournament will be the best ever Some of the best hockey games fans will see all year will be played this weekend Try to see some Barrie teams have been travelling to many tournaments this year The teams have been well received and well treated The tournament this weekend will be one way of repaying the kindness and hospitality they have received HABITS NEEDBREAKING The Barrie Flyers of the Ontario senior Hockey League W111 have to break some bad habits if they hope to win in Thunder Bay this weekend The Flyers will play the Twins Saturday night and Sunday afternoon
