now weve won 1ortonsaid 111 second place was the Stella Clark rink from Dunnville Both Iark and Morton were the only teams to go undefeated in the bonspiel Marg Bourgeois Diane Vollick and Vivian Shaw Flyers hurt by injuries By WERNER BERGEN Examiner Sports Editor II was sick and limping team that took to the ice Wednes day night for practice at the Barrie Arena The Barrie Flyers in the Ontario Senior Hockey League are hurting with almost everyone on the injury list The Flyers are currently in battle for second place in the league standings and if things keep up the way they are go ing they may have trouble hanging onto third place Steve Cripps the usually jovial manager of the Flyers was all business Wednesday without smile to spare Its terrible Cripps said shaking his head Were hur ting Add to the list of injuries the absence of Charlie Shaw Shaw requested short leave of absence month ago when everyone was healthy and the Flyers agreed Now the team could use the steady defenceman The Flyers take on the Orillia Terriers on Friday at the Barrie Arena at 830 pm The Flyers have always had trou ble with the Terriers and Barries best games of the season have been against their perennial northern rival Theyre always the best games Cripps said To top everything off the Terriers have won only one game in 1978 and will be out to end lengthy losing streak That is what the Burgess pull ed tendons in his ankle in practice several weeks ago and the injury is hampering the teams top goal scorer It really bothered him in the Cambridge game Cripps said Its going to take long time to heal We cant afford to have him sit out Phil Branston and Wayne Carleton are both playing hockey with pulled groin muscles Although the injuries are not serious enough to keep them off the ice they are serious enough to hamper the players effectiveness Cripps said there were several other bruises and minor in juries to slow the team down Everybody has either the flu or cold Cripps said There isnt player who doesnt have it Ernie Miller goaltender who started the year and retired only to return again will be missing this weekend because he will be in Montreal on business The Flyers have been hot the past two months After dismal start in which the Flyers were fighting to keep out of the leagues basement the team has come on and at one point was tied for first place loss to each had 28 victories McBride ac complished the feat with just four horses Wade said while Simo handled stable which included 11 horses over the season Last years champion Bob Scrannage had 27 winners
