Democratic Party provincial government had one drawbacktension in large models made them diffi cult to set That problem has been solved in the new model but the asso ciation lacks funds to pay for patent costs said Clements ASSIST INVENTORS The whole country the whole world is looking for hu mane trap said Clements We feel the provincial govern mentif it is really sincere about wanting humane traps should be assisting inventors such as Gabry Clements said the British Co lumbia government contributes only year to federal provincial committee that stud irs new traps He said the leghold trap is still the device most often used in Canadian trapping and BC is the only province which has banned leghold traps with ser rated teeth Clements said animals caught in the traps often take days to die while birds deer and sometimes humans also are injured by the devices Gabrys bionic trap he said has features that allow it to be triggered only by the specific animal for which it has been designed It comes in various sizes for animals ranging from squirrels to bears The animal is killed by direct blow on the back of the head Changing lifestyle helps them VANCOUVER CP Soar ing divorce rates women in the labor market and widespread dissolution of the nuclear family may be the evils of the 705 but to the restaurant business they mean cold cash loan Black Bakes editor of the New York Restaurant magazine said in an interview that changing lifestyle is the most important single factor in the rapid proliferation of res taurants and fastfood outlets Its the best thing thats happened to the food industry said Ms Bakes The tradi Iional family just isnt there anymore She said 47 per cent of Ameri can women work statistics are similar in Canada and this means not only that there are two incomes for the family but that the woman is not prepared to cook and clean up when she comes home The divorced man is likely to eat out and youngsters are spending their allowance on hot dogs and hamburgers Ms Bakos said the oppor tunities for women in the food service industry are increasing and am happy to see many schools are graduating more and more women chefs While fastfood chains rarel offer the personal touch wit their hamburgers they do meet specific consumer need she said And Ms Bakes sees no change in the near future Students learn how to write TORONTO ICP York Uni versity has designed an ex perimental workshop to teach about 2000 firstyear students of social science and humanities how to write at the postsecondary school level Judith Humphrey coordina tor of the workshop says stu dents take time from tutorials and lectures to learn how to or ganize an essay define its thesis and connect paragraphs to make writing smooth Sentence structure grammar and diction are also included From Egypts past The Friendship Memorial erected after Russian techni cians built the Aswan High Dam rises over waters of the Nile River Tuesday Inside the memorial are inscriptions in Russian and Arabic as well as profile view of former President Gamal Abdel Nasser behind picture of imcum bent President Anwar Sadat AP Photo New windmill idea tested WATERLOO Ont CP truck has been driving around the University of Waterloo campus in recent weeks with funnylooking device rectangu lar saillike blades that rotate The device is new kind of windmill being tested by Bill Schmidt research associate of Dr Gordon Bragg associate professor of mechanical engi neering The device is Filippini rrL tcr designed by Armando Ftlippini who lives in Ethiopia to enable African communities to pump water Not an engineer the inventor tried to come up with device that could be built out of materials readily available in the com munity We think the Filippini rotor is pretty good example of what we are starting to call ap ropriate technology said Bragg My impression is that it is not particularly efficient but on the other hand it is easy to build or repair You can use just about any thing you happen to have handy The fan blades on the small experimental model Filippini built in Ethiopia were actually made from old offset printing plates KEEP IT SIMPLE He said scientists in advan taged countries are starting to realize that some of their tech nology is too refined to be ap propriate to other parts of the world which lack the technical skills and the inventory Of spare parts to service sophisticated machinery Increasingly those involved with overseas aid are thinking in terms of what is appropriate to the situation This is in some ways just as much of chal lenge as trying to come up with the ultimate in sophisticated techniques and equipment Testing the Filippini rotor is part of project sponsored by the Canadian governments In ternational Development Re search Centre an organization which supports the develop ment of research capacity within disadvantaged coun tries The longrange Objective of the work we have been doing is to improve water supplies in many communities said Schmidt But we recognize that there is no one best of windmill or windmil and pump combination for all situations In one region Of country the need may be for relatively small quantities of water for human consumption and the source may be deepbore holes In another much larger quan tities of water may be required for irrigation and it may be rwdily available from nearby river or lake The system used to provide the water must be carefully matched to the situ ation Bragg and Schmidt are work ing on series of recommenda tions to help engineers make the best selections they hope to come up with handbook em bodying these recommenda lions In the last year Schmidt vis ited number of countries in cluding Ethiopia Sudan Kenya and Tanzania talking with people doing research and in specting windmill and pump in stallations The Filippini or similar wind machines may be uite useful in locations where ere are good wind conditions he said Its cost advantages are attractive especially when you compare the Filippini with the cost of more sophisticated ma chines that would otherwise have to be imported Many of the disadvantaged nations are already suffering from foreigntrade deficits and are much more interested in systems that can be manufac tured in local workshops DraWing by computer art format future REGINA CP Univer sity of Calgary fine arts in structor says computer drawing is an art form of the future In an interview while he was participating in an exhibition that included three of his com puter drawings Gerry Hushlak 32 said he wants to change the elitist nature of art with this new form Most people cant afford to buy works of art he said Computer art would be avail able to everyone cheaply and Im working on system that would allow anyone to produce it The programs that his associ ate Lynn Sveinson graduate mathematics student prepares after he develops basic con cepts and schemes require about 50 hours work The computer produces its geometric drawings in few minutes to 12 hours Hushlak and Miss Sveinson are working on computer pro gram that would allow anyoiie to make computer drawings Hushlak said he is often criti cized by people who say com puters cannot produce art They say its absolutely in bad taste The very mention of the word computer suggests lack of emotion response and looseness People want to know how expect machine to produce art that communicates any thing He compared his work with the Eiffel Tower It was nothing more than an architectural structure when it was built Now people dont think of that All they think of is that the Eiffel Tower commu nicates with them visually It doesnt matter how much sweat went into creating it Its still work of art You cant judge this kind Of art by traditional standards The criteria for measurement is not the method of production but rather the final product Hushlak said he rejects the malt of lot of realistic work preferring avantgarde pieces and his own computer art In many ways art is like sci ence Its constantly developing constantly changing Theres no sense inventing the wheel over and over The boundaries of knowledge must be constantly expanded Im walking the path be tween art and science Right now thats still nomans land
