Friday February 25 1977 The Barrie Examiner ARTHUR EVANS aid to economy Farm tariff protection is advocated by BRADFORD Staff Better tariff protection for farmers was stressed by Arthur Evans MPP for Simcoe Centre in review of Ontario agricultural policies Farming does not start and stop with freezing good farmland or even by maintaining farm income protection plan asserted Mr Evans Discussing other interests which contribute to the vitality of Ontario farming the former county warden who has been member of the Ontario legislature for nearly 16 years referred to research in bettering crop production per acre improvements in drainage soil compaction and permeabili ty and other aspects of modern agriculture Research into devasing means of using sewage and in dustrial waste on farm fields without harming crops or peo ple also is receiving attention There are no easy answers to the rsources and technological challenges commented the riding member in pointing out intensified research may provide the answers That is the purpose of the newly created Energy Management Resource Centre at Ridgetown said Mr Evans native of Tecumseth and resident of Bradford most of his life The Centre is available to help farmers on con cerns in energy conservation So often the urban dweller has heard about the concern of declining farmlands to housing and industrial develop ment but equally important matters seldom see the light of day said the Centre Simcoe MPP who headed Simcoe County council in 1958 As an example Mr Evans pointed out the Ontario agriculture and food ministry is spending about $15 million to finance well over 1000 individual research projects at the agricultural colleges arid the University of Guelph These projects could lead to improved crop production techniques he said adding that experiments could lead to more food produced per acre The nonfarmer who never gives thought to food produc tion but only to its price in the groceteria might be startled to learn that Ontarios farmers are the most productive part of the provincial economy having doubled their productivi ty during the past decade Yet in 1977 farmers will end the year with 19 per cent less in their pockets than in 1975 stated Mr Evans an ap parent reference to the present market outlook Mentioning the exportimport issues the riding member who has taken close interest in the farm economy pointed out these bear directly on the capacity of the Ontario farmer to obtain good return on his investment In the long run this will influence what it will cost the On tario consumer to buy certain farm commodities such as fresh fruit and vegetables at reasonable prices With its diversified agricultura Ontario has exported food commodities to value of $650 million the riding member pointed out Any loss of these markets or for that matter domestic markets means loss of jobs and incomes said Mr Evans in stressing the value of agriculture to the provincial economy Yet the Ontario farmer has to compete against low priced food im rts which are increasingly dumped in the provincial mar et Take canned tomatoes as just one exam ple of this problem of nonprotection for Ontarios products To complicate matters further Mr Evans added there have been wholesale and oneway tariff reduction concessions by the federal government to develo ing nations without any real concessions to help the Cana ian farmer The tariff reductions in horticultural and processed pork products represent small sam 1e of this wide scale action No similar advantages were tained from the other na tions The Ontario producer is not helped either by the combina tion of low Canadian farm tariffs and high tariff barriers in Evans expert markets especially the United States stated the riding member and onetime Bradford mayor Mr Evans referred to the Ontario minister of agriculture and food William Newman and his delegation to Ottawa which argued for more equalized treatment particularly when that same product moves north and south What Ontario seeks for its farmers is fairer treatment on importexport issues asserted the Centre Simcoe MPP BeSides addressing many farm groups throughout Ontaric including the Soil and Crop Association in Barrie Mr Newman also travelled to Geneva Switzerland to ensure that Ontarios viewpoint on farm commidities was heard He again presented these concerns to the federal provin cral meeting on GATT he said explaining this stood for General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade It has beer meeting over the past few weeks to negotiate new tariffs and better trading arrangements among the nations of the world he added Mr Evans concluded Just as foodland preservation anc farm income protection are essential so are the less glamorous but pressing matters in farming always needing attention and appropriate policies devised Our future well berng depends upon the resolution of these concerns Audience at Alliston applauds school choir By MARGARET STOLTZ ALLISTON The
