Rytttard says arrogance lost Quebec election By till II RYNARI tll Sitncoe North It is an morning fact that party dedicated to separatism was elected riverwhelmingly in the protince of Quebec par lltltl vl when you stop to con sider Illll only small propor tion of people in that province really tixttt to stparale lltt clot lion ittory of root the had léutimsa titd sy nuts imrrmv inc govetrztttrti or liberals Her t1 grail corruptsim lllt 011 top ul this Mr Bittlliissn the had introduced an educational bill making the province unilingual and forcing children into Frenchspeaking schools from homes in which the paren ts had come to Canada to escape oppression and to enjoy some measure of freedom of choice denied them in their native land To find this freedom suddenly taken away from them in province in which they had been led to believe had no mandate to do so as it was contrary to the very terms of Confederation Confederation had guaran teed them the right to use Fren ch or English whichever was desired The proceedings of the Legislative Assembly in Quebec City were to be recor ded in both languages There was to be no force used to make French speak English or English speak French They were both to be allowed to use their mother tongue It was the arrogance of the Liberal government with its mounting corruption and graft that made the people turn against it and they voted again st Mr Bourassa to get rid of him rather than voting for Mr Levesque Unfortunately perhaps they elected Mr Levesque and separatist government In other words it was negative vote Already Canada is in serious economic trouble We have priced ourselves out of many of the competitive markets of the world Indeed this might have been changed with the devaluation of the dollar to 921 cents policy which had been carried out on previous oc casion in 1962 This 712 per cent protection might have been just enough to increase our competitiveness and our trade and in the long run wipe out our $512 billion deficit The interest alone on this deficit is appalling Deficits like this cannot con tinue without destroying us CHASING INVESTORS Now we have to face the fact that investors in the United States and abroad are being warned openly of the risk of in vesting in Canada Even Canadian capital is being frightened away mostly to the United States Mortgage money is leaving the province of Quebec and coming to Ontario or the Western provinces Real estate values have dropped drastically in Quebec and there is buyers market 0f honis which are selling below their normal value and at that there are few takers Quebec industries are looking at sites in Ontario to got up business ntario interests are better served by placating Quebec for straight economic reasons but this does not apply in the same way to the economy of the western provinces In dollar terms the West might be better to separate At the present moment the West is supplying Quebec with gas and oil at lower than world prices and lower than that paid by the United States Therefore the West would be better off economically if it could sell its oil gas potash and other minerals to the United States Already the West is growing more rapidly than the rest of Canada It follows then that it is urgent that the question of separatism should be settled now and not four years hence to stop once and for all time the uncertainty that prevails in Canada By MRS DOWNING HOLLY Florence Downing has been installed as secretary and Marj Patterson as treasurer of the Holly church for the new term The election of officers
