The Barrie Examiner Tuesday February 1977 Ed Redden officially quit the weekend well He been it turning the reins over completely together three years ago few days before his was to leave from girls into young ladies their top clubs in internation play Hustlers never really caught the the national junior team upwards started my own cltib up Redden national championships nothing at the third This years edition level Take Ellanna tor example She ntario thought this would be beneficial teams to have top ranked players Hustlers club volleyball teams junior open championship championships on the same day pionships that year loss against the English National oRTs CORNER Redden leaves coaching job By RANDY MCDONALD Examiner Sports Editor Redden is the man who created the PeterReino Hustlers womens volleyball team and vaulted them to fame and glory not only nationally but on the international scene as posted to Canadian Forces Base Penhold in Alberta Unless hes found storm to slow him down he should be aiming his van at the western provinces by now Redden admitted that the move wasnt an easy one He didnt want to go right in the middle of new volleyball season But he had little choice when it came right down to He would have liked to have ended the season and worked with new coach Sue Stauth of Alliston little longer before He had made lot of friends since putting the Hustlers Ive seen couple of the girls grow up he said over lunch Ive seen them develop Redden put lot of miles on his cars and vans taking players to tournaments across the province into Quebec out of Nova Scotia and as well as dipping into the States to test Volleyball and all the travelling weve dotie helped develop them The team work aspect of volleyball really makes people better people he said area In their threeyear history the club has brought title after title to the area The list includes four Ontario cham pionships one international title in the 197576 season as well as an excellent tour of Britain last fall The calibre of players is shown by the three players the Hustlers placed on the Ontario Summer Games squad this year not to mention the invitations received for tryouts with Reddens interest in the sport goes way back before he got interested in the services In 1971 he was one of the list of 20 top coaches in anada brought into Quebec along with 10 of the best players from each province for today clinic It was here that his enthUsiasm for the sport took swing When came back from camp was so enthused that It bloomed into three girls teams and one for the boys with practice sessions Saturdays from am pm under coach In that time he sent three senior womens teams to the Redden came to FB Borden in 1974 in Personnel Ad ministration Tlie move to FB Penhold is as Construction Engineer and dministrative fficer He rememlxred those first months trying to get club together in the area The emphasis was on developing the girls where the interest appeared to be We started moving in July with the first practice about the middle of August We had no money no sponsor no Five players showed for the first practice There were six veterans remaining from that first season Mickey Fusedale Ellanna cKendry Debbie Emms and Gerri arrie were on the original club when it was known as the Simcoe County Volleyball lub Redden has been witness to the growth of volleyball iii popularity at both the elementary and secondary school Elementary school teachers are really doing good job in most cases The only thing they lack is developing proper systems in their play Redden said Volleyball 1S great for team work added Redden but he also emphaSized the importance of personal drive first year and now is one of the top junior players in all of The one thing which annoyed Redden was the fact that his players arent allowed to play on high school teams He The school system is also the feeder system for the Rcddcn said he felt the schools put too much =r pressure on the kids to stay with the school teams He is thinking nationally when he says that the only way players are going to get this type of competition is with The new coach of the Hustlers is physical education teacher at Ailiï¬oiis Banting Memorial High School Sue Stauth tookover as coach of both the boys and girls felt she was the most qualified coach in the area She was the first person asked explained Redden Highlights There are many for Reddcii The first Nova Scotia tour was one We had two cars eight players coach and Ed Dupuis itrameri We drove 701 miles in seven days and played the University of New Brunswick the Lniversity of Moncton before winning the Redden felt it was then that the real team was developed In 1973 we won the ntario junior and senior league the most satisfying moments for me he said Hustlers also won the Detroit lpen and junior open chamr This year the trip to England ranked as another of the coaches favorite memories Hustlers came back with only Team xs
