worldwide NEW YORK AP What began as kitchentable in dustry in 1954little scarves tea towels and pot mittsand grew into worldwide operation that has included romantic dresses fabrics and other articles designed by Welshwoman Laura Ashley now has spread to the United States Yard goods special dress patterns home furnishings fabrics and wall coverings are being turned out by three liccni sees And there may be wool rugs and fabrics one of these days said Mrs Ashley explaining that with 1000 sheep grazing about their land she and her husband Bernard were thinking about the possibilities of wool articles Whereas it is said that the long dresses business that be gan irl 196 can be worn milk ing cows or to your own wed ding and often are the new home fabrics are being hailed for their romantic appeal Old quilts hatbox linings and her aldic designs provide some of the patterns that are imagina tivly styled by Mrs Ashley IOIILAR IN EUROPE We make the concept of the design in words rather than on paper she said The colors may be taken from berries flowers or grasses There is great movement toward sim pler things sort of mallllerly but not unsophisticated In Europe people queue up to buy thedesiglLs Designs for the American market were selected st there would be no regional barriers good deal of emphasis was put on reproducing colors so they are as true as those made in the printing plants that are run by the Ashleys in three Eu ropean countries they ex plained on recent visit to the United States The thing about textiles is that the design is moving all the time and the role of critic is im portant Ashley said Laura is severe critic She is never really satisfied although she usually compromises Oth erwise we wouldnt produce anything REPRODLCEI VINYL And now know why twit ted Richard Kirkham presi dent ol Raintree Designs who is reproducing the home fabrics in cotton and wall coverings in vinyl Not only are the color difficult to reproduce here be cause they are so unusual but Laura is meticulous Samples have been back and forth to Eu rope great many times while the II cotton prints and 15 wall coverings were evolving He said it was difficult to per suade Mrs Ashley that the de signs that are on wallpaper in Europe could be reproduced as well on vinyl which the Ameri can consumer prefers for its easy maintenance Ninety per cent of the wall coverings on the American market are wash able vinyls The Ashley business is mas terminded by Bernard or Din Mawr the big man as he says he is called in Wales They have just opened two shops in San Francisco to add to the 40 in other countries DESIGNS VARIEI Designs of home fabrics in clude mythical griffins animals in forest scenes swans thistles MR AND MRS CRAIG MILLER MILLERWEBB St James United Church Stroud was
