the Family Living Group at Brant ford General Hospital is We Help Ourselves by Helping th ers The motto has special mean ing for 10 young men who have spent some 900 hours since May 31 helping these handicapped persons The men are prisoners at Burtch Correctional Centre minimumsecurity prison south of here They really have volun teered to help themselves said Bill Torma social worker on staff at the iri stitution They have added new dimension to the benefits of volunteer program and in this case the benefits go to the volunteers The Family Living Group was established in 1971 The program is now under the hospitals occupational therapy department Members of the centre are given therapy and chance to socialize with their families The centre caters to inpatients who are victims of amputation blindness heart attacks and various other debilitating dis eases PRAISE IRISONIIIKS The centre owes its usefulness to the prisoners without whom itcouldiit operate say permanent staff members oncerns of some hospital staff and patients about prison crs working in the hospital dis appeared soon atter the pro gram was begun Mr Torma said The prisoners quickly proved they could fit in and gain the trust and confidence of the handicapped The guiding philosophy of the Family Living Group is that every individual has something to offer anothcre no one is use less Mr Torma said The prisoners from Burtch gain from this philosophy as well he noted In this envi ronment they not only help the participants with their various tasks and problems they are helped with their problems too
