the race for reeve in Essa township topped the polls with 249vote edge over incumbent Eugene Smith All but one of the people elected to the five offices open are newcomers to Essa council while three of the five have never sat on council before Mr Pridham owner of Not tawa Electric in Angus and father of four has never held political office before Anthony Mancini the third place reeve candidate who brought in just 678 votes despite his experience on council said once the polls were in that con troversy over the Angus arena could have been the cause for the rout Of the members of the previous council just one was returned to office Maurice Miller stepping down from deputy reeve to run for coun cillor because of health pro blems was elected with 1146 votes He ran second to newcomer Bev Regan with 1319 the homemaker from Angus who consistently led the polls for councillor throughout the long night Final returns came in at 1am Eric Binns restaurant and hotel supplier also of Angus placed third in the councillors race with 1178 votes Incum bent Ed MacDonald placed poor fourth with 1055 In the office of deputy reeve what began as runaway per formance by Earle Williams changed into tight race against incumbent councillor DonElines REGAINED LEAD Williams now member of the Essa planning board and former member of Barrie coun cils lost his lead at one point but finished with 1539 Elines now in hospital after serious farming accident received 1373 Votes Mr Pridham took an early lead for reeveship with the first polls one from four Angus village polls and one of five Angus subdivision polls com ingin after1pm It was steady lead of at least 100 votes that be main tained until the 18th poll was in and he trailed 824 to 840 on the latest votes from Ivy The 19th from another Angus subdivi sion poll put Pridham back in the lead however DECISIONS Mr Pridham has taken stand of no promises no deals telling voters he felt he could offer sensible business ap proach to council He also said at the last can didates meeting held in Angus Wednesday he felt his inex perience would bring freshness to council Ill make no promises other than getting quicker decisions on council and getting back to the people with the decisions be commented Wednesday would also like ratepayers groups formed He has pushed for properity in the small township through medium growth an issue present councillors have come under fire for over the lack of industry attracted to Essa Arena to blame Mancini Mondays vote in Essa township was vote against the present councils stand on the Angus arena according to An thony Mancini Coun Mancini unsuccessful in his bid for reeve said Essa voters dropped all but one of the present council members because of the issue He ran third in the election with 678 votes as compared to 1248 by winner Charlie Pridham and 999 by incumbent Eugene Smith The only candidate for reeve at the polling station when final results came in Coun Mancini finishing as candidate for coun cillor with 946 votes Eric Binns who came out for new start on arena building was elected to council with thirdplace vote 1178 Bev Regan newcomer to council who favored recrea tional development that she said should include an arena topped the votes for councillor consistently with 1319 Coun Ed MacDonald who said last week the township had no choice in the arena case but to continue with the suit lost his seat He came fourth with 1055 getting just nine votes in one Borden poll and seven in another There is lawsuit still peri ding between the township and the arena board in the Supreme Court with no date set as yet Hardesthit by the issue was Reeve Smith who had said Wednesday that while he was sure there is need for an arena costs coud be blamed on residents together Its my turn he said as voting results tumbled in Mr Campbell raked in 1459 votes beating opponent Charles Simpson by 432 votes in the race for reeve in Oro township Monday night really didnt think Id win by that much he admitted Im quite satisfied Mr Campbell was the first reeve candidate to show up at the tournship hall on the seventh line where results were posted His wife Jean ac companied him The win was no surprise to the new reeve He took the ma jority of votes from eight of 12 polls The biggest poll Oro Sta tion came in second to last He polled 271 votes to Mr Simp McLean confident of winning It was rather unemotional Al McLean who came away Monday night as the new deputyreeve of Oro township was confident would do well he said puffing com placently on cigar as he jotted down figures from the black board didnt expect that much of majority though he said Mr McLean beat rival Paul Hansen in all but one of the 12 1G RPCFFING l1 sons 116 in Oro Station had clean campaign he said Nothing dirty has been done Mr Campbell lost to Mr Simpson two years ago in the race for deputyreeve He was beaten by 12 votes But not only are they old rivals they are friends Mr whole campaign was kind of blah said Ross Saunders as he stood at city hall watching school board results being posted Bill Straughan described it as With so many concerns and the amount of money being spent am disappointed there was so little interest The race for public and separate school boards got off to an uninteresting start with 21 of the 36 seats being awarded through acclamation The sad thing is some of the ones acclaimed are not the ones who take an active part said Mr Straughan In Barrie where there were races for the three seats on both boards sitting members were reelected For the Simcoe County Board of Education Dr Allen Fisher was in first place with 7548 votes Betty Thompson was se cond with 7267 Mr Straughan JOHN BRENNAN strong interest Campaign kind of blah finished third with 6850 Bob Boden was fourth with 6231 For the Simcoe County Roman Catholic Separate School Board current chair man John Brennan led the polls with 1090 Mr Saunders fin ished with 732 votes REGAINS SEAT The third position with 675 votes went to Tony Decarie former member of the board who regained the seat he lost in 1974 when redistribution cut the number of separate school board seats to two Mr Decarie defeated new comer Clair Moreau who had 494 votes and the two changed positions several times while the ballots were being counted Hazel Ann Carson finished with 503 votes and Marcel Moreau with 230 Mr Brennan said the turnout was very good and attributed it to the strong interest in the mayoralty race which brought people out to the polls Mr Saunders was impressed Clarence Smith tops poll Clarence Smith tucked his winning votes away and went his victory party got it he said as th results of the remaining polls came in Monday night at the townshiphall He was surprised at UK number of supporters from Shanty Bay and Guthrie Wh added to his 1442 vote total They object to the industrial park he said And Mr Smith is all for it as source 01 revenue Mr Smith led the other rc He said the number of candidates was good sign people are wondering what its all about Mrs Thompson said she has been knocking on doors throughout the city for the past few weeks but found there were few concerns about school board Mrs Thompson said com munication must be lacking because of limited interest in the race Mr Straughan shared her opinion saying the board is go ing to have to work hard at tell ing the public what it is doing NOT CONFIDENT Mr Straughan said he ar rived at city hall Monday night feeling he had done good job but not confident he would re gain his seat knew what happened to George the last time he said In 1974 Mr Straughan was the newcomer to the school board race and defeated in cumbent George Taylor Rev Bob Boden who was newcomer to the race and was defeated said he was glad he entered and pleased with his finish Rev Boden said he presented himself as an alternative can didate and did not invest any money into the campaign He said he is not politically oriented and found there were no issues raised during the weeks before the election Hazel Ann Carson who fin ished fifth in the separate school board race said she will probably try again in the next election She suggested church or ganizalion might consider holding an allcandidates meeting next time Im not young enough to go out and knock on doors said Dr Fisher left it entirely to the people to decide Dr Fisher praised his two colleagues on the board saying the public had elected responsi ble trustees However he also expressed concern over the lack of in terest municipalities
