Provincial Treasurer Darcy McKeoughs document called Ontarios economic strategy for 1977 is one of the Ontario Governments series of re sponses to maintain vigorous and healthy economy The basic thrust of this strategy is to encourage private enterprise to continue to invest in Ontarios future and thereby help to create new jobs and pre vent the loss of existing jobs to other job markets The other less economically sound argir ment is to increase the number of government jobs and in the process contribute to inflation The provincial treasurer backed his words with action by extending the exemption on sales tax for production machinery and equipment By doing so we maintain strong competitive level with neighboring provinces and states such as Quebec New York Ohio and Michigan Even then the sales tax burden on new investment is still higher in Ontario than these other areas The cost of this exemption to the public sector is $160 million for full year and possibly another $10 million The deduc tion will also be expanded to in clude capital gains taxespaid abroad in the belief that tario firms doing business abroad will return capital lo Ontario For small business the press ing
