the HSA through the assistance of the local ministry of natural resources at Midhurst stand with regards to properly groomed and signed trail system in Simcoe County The first step of the operation is that at the Association level We have Trail Committee Big things expected at Peaks Skiers are expecting big things of Georgian Peaks Ski Club at Thombury this season and the reaSOn is clear The club taken over last year by Rose Community is in the midst of $1 million facelift that will be completed over five years One quarter of the total is being expended this season primarily for the purchase of snowmaking equipment Rose Communitys chief ex ecutive Norman Wright said in recent telephone interview that the equipment will enable Georgian Peaks to stay open even during bad natural season The additional equip ment will allow the club to tri ple its snowmaking capacity He said the new owners aspiration was to double the at tendance at Georgian Peaks in one year They expected word of mouth from skiers making early visits to the club to help spread the Word about the ex cellent facilities available there Already the club has in volved itself in an extensive program with physical educa tion instructors in southern On tario which will bring school or club groups out on weekends Georgian Peaks is also signed up for Pontiac Cup and CanAm events said Mr Wright Features of the Peaks include the highest vertical drop in On tario over 900 feet the longest run in the province one and half miles 18 interconnected ski runs novice to expert rat ing the most sophisticated timing and communication sys tem for racing in the province fulltime ski school and cer tified instructors and coaches crosscountry trails and lodge with licensed restaurant One of the problems weve run into has been great deal of ersion Too many trees were removed originally Tlicre been some deterioration of trails said Mr Wright The crews worked this sum mer to rectify that with the planting of 3000 trees special hydro seeding to prevent eros ion and the placing of eight tons of fertilizer on the slopes for improvement of ground cover and soil retention Mr Wright said Georgian Peaks was hoping to work closely with the government to make this area attractive to Ontario Canadian and American skiers Were hoping to make it the Peaks as good as if not better than most other resorts of the province Projected opening of the re juvenated Georgian Peaks 18 Dec FastGrowing Snowmobiling is one of North Americas fastestgrowmg wm ter sports accordin to recent survey Snowmobi mg offers the opportunity for exercnse coupled With camarad arie in variet of outdoor activities inclu ing cooking out camping trail riding ice fishing and Just plain relaxmg with chairman secretary treasurer along with several zone men who are given each an area of the county Each of these men have several clubs in their area to look after and their job is direc ted to link their section of trail to the next clubs section All this having been accomplished the matter of building bridges and gates goes into effect to make safe trail system Signs are posted similar to road signs along with arrows to direct the snowmobiler along the proper area The whole trail system is in sured by the Association for the protection of both the lam downer and the snowmobiler Up to this point many hours of volunteer labor have been put in as no one gets paid in the organization except the seven groomer operators that nor mally work 40 hour week on the trails grooming and keeping the trail in good order or making changes where necessary such as trimming the underbrush or removing ob stacles putting up new signs etc Blair Commission report attacked by ski resorts Representatives of the On tario Ski Resorts Association which is made up of virtually all commercial areas in On tario advised the Blair Com mission on property tax refor ms that implementation will result in an annual increase of as much as 132 per cent for ski areas in the province Since most areas are located in primarily rural and sparsely populated parts of the province on land that is of little or no use for housing or farming they by present assessment procedures already bear large share of the total taxes raise on com mercial industrial properties in these areas When assessment and market value was introduced into Collingwood Township in 1974 taxes on Blue Mountain Resorts Limited went up by 60 per cent Taxes on this resort had already been increased by 19 per cent in 1973 Think snow stamp out summer Women Challenge Men In Snowmoblle Racing Competltlon Unlike the NASCAR and NHRA circuits or the Indy 500 where female racers like Janet Guthrie and ChaCha Mul downey are just beginning to gain recognition and unlike the thoroughbred horse racing track where feminine riders have had to jockey for position with their male competitors women have traditionally shared the spotlight with men in the sport of snowmobile racing Ever since the advent of the sport snowmobile racing cir cuits like the USSA United States Snowmobile Association and the MlSA Michigan Inter national Snowmobile Associa tion have included womens Powder Puff classes in all events Women like Audrey Decker matriarch of the well known Team Deckers SkiD00 and MotoSki racing family from Marshfield Wis gained regional recognition in the USSA Central Division and national acclaim in the USSA World Series Audrey whose Team Dockers includes hus band Dick sons Steve Mike Allen and Chuck plus daugh terinlaw Mary won the USSA gold highpoint bib for women in 1975 sweeping Wl and 12 classes and ranking third in W3 For the past five consecu tive years Audrey Decker has qualified for USSA World Se ries in every womens class on her familys SkiD00 and Moto Ski sleds Diane Miller of Flushing Mich first challenged men in their own events aboard her Ski D00 and MoteSki RV racing sleds on the MlSA circuit Like Guthrie and Muldowney Diane encountered male opposition in the beginning The new tax proposal calls for implementation of the market value method all over the province with the prospect of yet more severe increases than those already experienced by Blue Mountain The resort operators com mittee warned that the in crease in municipal taxes that would result from the provin ces reform plan would bring further difficulties to the hard pressed resorts of the province and could actually drive many of them out of business Most are now having dif ficulty in staying out of the red The short season lthree months Inflationary
