His suffe VA WESTMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SATURDAY SERMON When we need new lnSIde By REV FRANK WUEST Emmanuel Ba tistChurch Im not han yman dont understand much about how my car engine works took course in school which ex glained how electricity works ut still cant tell you how house is wired My knowledge of plumbing is limited to chang ing washers in leaking faucets Recently decided to use my limited ability to change worn out washers in our kitchen and bathroom taps The first thing did was to turn off the water at the main valve where the water supply enters the house You can remove the inside of faucet without doing this but can tell you from experience that its impossible to replace it without turning off the main water line The water pressure the city provides is sufficient to send the water out the open faucet pipe all the wav to the ceiling The few minutes of excite ment provided between the time the faucet fixture is removed and the time someone runs to turn off the water leave an indelible impression on the mind and ceiling It also gives other members of the family something to talk about and laugh at for sometime WATER OFF So remembered to cut off the city supply of water pressure and water first got new washers and screws ready Several screwdrivers and wren ches were prepared first removed the handle from the hot and cold faucets No pro blem so far Now was able to get an ad justabe wrench on the place provic on the inside fitting Try as did could not at the thing move Rust an wear had done its work Everything hadsiezedu After applying oil was able to unscrew the inside fixture Yes the washer was worn out also discovered some of the threads were stripped In fact the whole thing was badly worn finally had to buy new replacements The trouble was more serious than had thought Now with new inside pieces were not only saving water my wife is happier when shes near the sink This is im portant Have you ever wondered what was wrong with your life Things dont seem to turn out right Youve looked for peace of heart security and some sense of purpose Only frustra tion disappointment and hear ring eased theirs By DOROTHY KILBLRN Campus Life ordinations of women are scheduled for Nov 30 in at least three Canadian dioceses out side Montreal He said that day will be momentous for the Anglican Church of Canada There are many for whom this event will be traumatic break with the scripture and tradition of the Anglican com munion he said VANCOUVER CP Arch bishop Angelo Palmas Roman Catholic papal ambassador to Canada says the world situ in Can ada is in much the same predi cament as in other countries but is in healthy state in Brit ish Columbia Social problems are occupyv ing an important place in the life of the church as well as society and that is why the Ca nadian Catholic Conference of Bishops is so concerned with current issues he said The church must always be mirror of society yet it can not change either its mission structure or essential doc trine OUTLAWEI MACHINES BALTIMORE AP The Johns Hopkins Hospital where much of the research leading to the Original Surgeon Generals report on smoking occurred has banned cigarette machines and prohibited doctors and nur ses from smoking in patient care areas Hospital board members decided that physi cians should set examples for the entire hospital community tache have resulted from all your earnest efforts Yes you have tried religion In fact you feel youre more sincere than most of the pea ppleyou know REPAIR WORK You may have been looking to do just little repair work Replace that bad habit with good one Be little more faithful in church attendance Try to read from the Bible each day These things are like try ing to change washer when the whole inside fixture is broken The Bible says our basic pro blem is that our hearts are deceitful above all things and desperately wicked We need more than little overhaul We need completely new inside Only God can make us new on the inside will give you new heart Ezekiel 3626 In fact the risen living Christ says Behold stand at the door and knock if any man hear my voice and open the door will come in to Him Revelation320gt When we ask the Lord Jesus to come into our lives He does He cleanses from all sin He gives new attitudes desire and loves Only then is life really worthwhile ideas wondering whatever he could say to them that would meet their tremendous need Then he saw their hands ugly and crippled and as he looked he remembered other hands nailpierced and painracked bearing the weight of the divine Son of God on the Cross of Calvary So he told them about the hands of Jesus crucified for them The effect upon the lepers was electrifyingthe Son Of God sufferer like them selves Immediately they WéEé able to identity wun uus astonishing lovefilled God and He was able to cheer and encourage them Before Dr Brand spoke some of the patients had sat on their hands or enfolded them in their robes in an effort to hide them After he had finished speaking they all raised their hands palm to palm in the Indian gesture of respect namaste The fact that the Saviour had suffered made their suffering easier The reason the story of Jesus is so effective is because it shows us God who has been there right where we are in our own peculiar particular situation That God is able to understand to sympathise and to bring peace of heart and joy And He has promised never to leave nor forsake us Hebrews 135 will never leave thee nor forsake thee When little lad was asked what that verse meant he an swered think it means that when am alone there will always be two instead of one HOLY LAND Christian sojourn to Bible Lands and Europe Rev and Mrs John Speers plan to lead this week
