be good insur ance against lead poisoning in children The study financed by the National Science Foundation was based on interviews with families of about 50 children who had large amounts of lead in their bloodstream Lead poisoning can impair development of the brain and nervous system and can cause anemia hyperactivity and in some cases death Lead is found in automobile exhaust in many factories and sometimes in canned food but the major source for children public health authorities say is the leadbased paint used in many homes built before the Second World War Curious or hun ry children children were not getting enough calcium in their diet said Ann Ewsolowski student at Holy Cross College who par ticipated in the study NEED BALANCED DIET Were not saying that childs whole diet should con sist of milk which is rich in calcium If body is to retain calcium balanced diet is im portant What the study showed is that if children do not get enough calcium it is more likely he or she will retain lead absorbed in the blood system Alan Clark assistant Dro fessor of chemistry at Clark University and coordinator for the project said lead and calcium have similar chemical action What we think can happen is that the body can mistake lead for calcium and thus absorb it he said Yamuna Lin appa medical technician wi the city health department and another par ticipant in the study noted that many children who get lead poi soning live in poor areas Cross Country Skiina Now available at Roya Downs Golf Country Club °Supply your own equipment Season Daily Prices Available Open am to pm tried something new with couple of largerockeries One is at the hospital and most people are familiar with it It is just above the main parking lot There is very steep incline on this rockery and we are troubled with soil run off each year This year we cut off or pulled out all the un wanted foliage and annual plants Then we applied an ap plication of super phosphate planted the new bulbs thinned out the perennials that were too thick covered all with some peat moss then put all the debris we usually put in the compost back on the rockery It really looked like the rockery was put to slee for the winter We hve never one this before so the public can judge whether it was right or wrong Then on my own large roekery built on public proper ty on Mary St did the same thing The reason for it was dif ferent though Usually clean up the rockery for fall planting and the city picks up the debris This year the leaf hopper went by at least six titties and each time noticed it was hopeless It remained for me to bag all that debris hire truck or fling it all back on the rockery So spring will tell if Ive smothered the plants sowed lot of weeds or really done the plants favor We had another little incident happen of interest to those who watch the flowers at Itoyal Vic toria Hospital There is large raised bed where we plant tulips in the fall and eraniums in summer Usual we leave the tulips in three years This year the gar dener couldnt recall if be dug The action their key about money lhals our business Mortgage money to purchase new home money for home impzmemcnis new car money to consolidate hill or refinance an twisting mortgage ll what stands between you and thing mnennn loans Mortgages Sales financing Moncy in action the tuli or not although he thinks did So instead of taking chance on planting more tulips if some were already there we have ordered 400 pansies to be planted as soon as snow goes If you have ever seen beautifu pansy bed you would never forget it There
