the 10th an niversary of the opening of Sim coe County archives will be held on Sunday afternoon Nov 21 starting at oclock number of original maps dating back to the 16th century which was part of donation by Norman Clarke of Barrie will be opened and placed on dis play for the first time at the ar chives First county archives es tablished in Ontario the Sim coe County archives was of ficially opened in the fall of 1966 as Canada centennial project The project was in answer to requests that some way should be found to preserve the coun tys heritage of written pic torial and cartographic ma terial SUPPORTED BY WI Before the archives was opened here diaries maps newspapers and pictures cre ated by pioneers and their descendants were often sent to other jurisdictions or were ly ing about unnoticed or un wanted in basements and at tics In 1965 after su port had been mobilized local Womens Institute branches and the County Historical Association bylaw authoriz ing the Simcoe County archives project was passed by county council The archives was to collect preserve and make available historical documents INGRAM AMOS board chairman relating to the history of the county Subsequently the official opening took place in No vember 1966 adding new wing to the existing county museum Centennial grants from the federal and provincial governments helped to finance theproject The first county archivist was Nobert Moran who was succeeded by his son Peter Moran about two years ago Simcoe County archives de ation pends upon donations transfers and in some cases loans for the bulk of its material pointed out Mr Moran The archives today holds variety of material including original newspapers and some microfilm covering rou hly 1847 to 1940 from all parts the county county and township assessment rolls from 1858 to 1912 ori inal maps and atlases from 17t century to the latest county map family collections made up of diaries journals letters photos and genealogies and various oral history tapes INVENTORIES KEPT UP Inventories of collections listings including index of ma jor newspaper holdin with over 18000 entries are ept by staff as well as entry card catalogue and other records Regular winter hours at the archives are from am to Tuesday to Saturday and mm to pm on Sunday In crease in usage of the archives has been steady since the open ing 10 years ago with many students among the resear chers Reeve Ingram Amos of Me donte is chairman of the pre sent county museum and library board Other members are Reeve Bruce Dockray of Port McNicolI Mrs Cecil Reynolds Gowan store manager All three have previously served on council The incumbent reeve Fergus Grose decided not to stand some time ago after heading the council for four years We have one councillor seek ing reelection and four new candidates Rev Douglas Gill clergyman and presently council member William Gowan retired farmer Wesley Rowbotham carpenter Harold McArthur construction super visor and Patrick Prime building contractor are all hop ing to fill the four council seats An advanced poll will be held at the Municipal Office on Saturday Nov 27 CHURCH BAZAAR St Johns United Church will be holding Tea Bake Sale and Bazaar on Saturday Nov 27 at 230 pm in the church hall Bible studies are being held at the United Church Manse On Sunday evening at 815 pm under the diredtion of Rev Carnochan On Wednesday morning Bible studies are being conducted by Capt Mae Layte of the Salva tion Army Hope Acres and Rev Carmochan HOBART Mr and Mrs Ross Gibson had their family all under the parental roof on Sunday when Mr and Mrs John Haines and baby son of Guelph and Mr and Mrs Jim Arnold and baby daughter of Toronto along with the rest of the family joined with them to spend happy day snowfall we ex perienced recently resulted ill the temporary closure of Creemores arena The arena was closed for week with all activities cancelled The snow was finally cleared from the roof when the Room on Nov 10 Mrs Ellen Rustinc conducted the Worship Service based on the theme God Man and Ar chie Bunker The theme was demonstrated with panel of POLICE Eleanor Watt Marilyn Allciiby and Dorothy Ann Wilcox Mrs Doug Jackson presented program about China uba and Tanzania focusing on topics such as government education marriage customs childraising and the parents role Group discussions followed summary of condi tion and report on the status of women in Canada concluded the program Mrs Dalton Jackson presi dent opened the business period with an autumn pocm The meeting was concluded with
