NDP minicaucus meeting hears farmers teachers By SHEILA McGOVERN Examiner Staff Reporter The Ontario New Democratic Party agrees with Simcoe County teachers is sym pathetic to area farmers but is at odds with the industrial relations manager of Man sfieldDenman General Limited Friday five members of the party set up shop at Georgian College to listen to concerns of local people The minicaucus listened as Tom Smith president of the Simcoe County Federation of Agriculture outlined his groups objections to the Progressive Conservative farm income stabilization plan which is now before the Legislature The local farmers said they are not convinced farmers will have enough in ut into the set ting up and ministration of the plan They also objected to using the last five years as basis for coverage and suggested the plan use the an nual cost of production On both these points the mini caucus agreed James Renwick Toronto Riverdale told the farmers the NDP has entered an amendment to the Bill calling for defined role for farmers in the administration ofthe Bill He also agreed the govem ment chose hell of five year period to base its LOCAL ONE DECEMBER MEETING The Simcoe County Roman and secondary schools Secondary school grants are now higher Mr Bailey said elementary programs are as important as secondary as teachers must take fiveyearold child and have him reading writing and totally prepared for secondary courses by the time he leaves the elementary school He said the pupilteacher ratio which includes all staff in the school from custodians to the principal should be replaced by classsize measurement Mr Bailey said he taught classes in the past two years that were in excess of 40 studen ts where reading abilities could range from Grade to Grade 12 He also noted elementary schools do not have proper facilities for home economics or industrial arts and that the elementary schools do not come ciluipped with showers for use ter gym SWEAT AS MUCH Older elementary students sweat every bit as much as young high school students he said Mr Bailey said the current approach to French in elemen tary schools is tokenism and should be reviewed He said the local federation would like to see higher quality of teachertraining and move to teachers becoming selfgoverning profession The NDP education policy agrees with equalization of grants between elementary and secondary schools and yeater emphasis on French However Bud Germa Sud bury said he had reservations about selfgoverning professions The minicaucus found nothing to agree with in brief from Joe Borrows CHRISTMAS ALLOWANCE The Childrens Aid Society of the County of Simcoe Tuesday approved recommendation from staff that the allowance for Christmas gifts for children in its care be increased The allowance for children of elementar school age will be increased $250 to $1750 and for adolescents by $250 to $2750 The figure for children under school age $10 will re main intact LABOR COUNCIL Election of officers for the Barrie and District Labor Council which had been scheduled for Tuesday has been postponed toJan 18 DEFICIT CUT The projected deficit for the year of the Childrens Aid it as the dirtiest place in Ontario He said the workers had an understanding with In ternational Nickel that an em ployee could leave his place of work when he felt his life was in danger He said session of contract talks Dec 13 board chairman Ross Stephens said today The session will be the second since negotiations resumed last month after sevenmonth breakdown Involved are about 30 full time nurses employed at the Simcoe County District Health Unit members of Local 37 On tario Nurses Association Lilian Fralick resident of the local said ay the date appears to be acceptable It will follow Dec association meeting in Toronto At issue in the longstanding dispute are nurses demands for wage parity with their counterparts in ospitals and for an arbitration clause The board has offered an in crease of six per cent in pay and two per cent in benefits saying there is no more money available However provincial health minister Frank Miller announced early this month the province will pay its share75 per centof the funds needed to achieve parity and Mr Stephens said the announce ment opens up whole new ball game Nurses involved in the dispute make $10900 to $13150 year compared to $13380 England the clu played matches against the En lish National Team and top clu from Ireland Wales and England Against these top teams from the British Isles the Hustlers compiled an outstan ding record of nine wins and one loss The PeterReino sponsored team openedup the tour in Lon don with an impressive 50 vic tory over the second ranked Ireland team from Dublin Hustlers won by scores of 154 158 154 159 and 155 The next opponent was Dar tord College London who were runnersup for the 197576 British Isles University Cham pionship The Dartford team put up good battle but were defeated 40 by the Hustlers The game scores were 157 1512 1512 and 156 In one of the best efforts by the Hustlers they defeated the third ranked English Club team called the Putney Kestrels 41 by scores of 154 1545 1115 150 and 156 The next match was one of the highlights of the tour as the Hustlers met the Spark Club from London The Spark team has four players on the English National team and they are rated the top 197677 English Club Hustlers finally arrived late at the gym after transportation problems and after short warmup were solidly beaten in the first game 151 But from then on it was all the Hustlers as they fought back and came through with victories in the next two games 1510 and 156 to win the match and lot of personal satisfaction along withit The next day the Hustlers trained with the English Na tional team in training ses sion run primarily by the two coaches of the Hustlers ONLY DEFEAT Sunday the PeterReino Club suffered their first and only defeat of the tour The English National team played superb volleyball and defeated the Hustlers 50 Hustlers were not up for this match at all and the determined En ish squad were full value of their victory The coach of the English Na tional team Ken Harvey stated that this was one of the best ef forts ever by the English squad and felt it would greatly help them in their next international Match against West Germany on November 27th Hustlers then moved on to Liverpool for three days In friendly match the Hustlers won the first three games and the Kirby Club won the last two The scores were 158 1511 1510 1115 and 915 The next day was probably the most hectic of the tour At 10 am Hustlers put on atelevised twohour demonstra tion for 600 English students The team was then taken on fivehour tour of the walled city of Chester That night the Hustlers played the Kirby Club 197576 English Club Cham ions in the official match ore crowd of nearly 400 paid admissions This match was the best played of the tour The Hustlers came up with good solid performance and triumphed 30 by scores of 1510 1511 and 1715 Hustlers then moved on to Bristol In the first game of doubleheader before over 200 spectators the PeterReina team defeated the second ranked Wales team 20 by scores of 155 and 1511 The se cond match saw the Hustlers defeat hardworking team Whitefield of Bristol 152 and 158 In the final match of the tour the PeterReino Club defeated strong defensive team from Speedwell of Bristol 155 1513 and 1510 The team was very well received throughout England and their fine standard of play and enthusiasm defnitely re sulted in
