employees Floyd Laughren NDPNickel Belt said Mon day Unless they are mandatory the people who need them the most wont get them he told the legislature during debate on occupational health and safety legislation Spokesmen for both op position parties indicated Mon day that they support the prin ciples of the bill which would allow employees to refuse to work if they believe the work place to be unsafe The bill also would give re sponsibility for occupational health and safety matters to the labor ministry Previously three ministries had been in volved in the safety field Mr Laughrensaid the bill does not go far enough when it says the labor minister may re quire an employer to form joint health and safety com mittee to study the work place MIGIIT ACCEPT Remo Mancini LEssex South said his party might ac cept an amendment from the to make the committees mandatory But James Bullbrook LSarnia disagreed He said that if an employer has done plants 00d 0b in making the work glacelsafe there would be no need for such committee Mr Laughren also suggested that ministry of occupational health be established the money to be found perhaps by abolishing some government bodies such as the secretariat for resources development Mr Bullbrook said he was pleased with the section ofthe legislation giving res nSibility for the field to the la minis try which he described as very vital ministry Marvin Shore PCLondon North said he hopes that even tually the problems of stress and lack of exercise foroffice workers might be conSidered part of occupational health But he added that the legisla tion under debate was not the place for such provisions Ted Bounsall NDPWin dsorSandwich said the bill does not provide for com pulsory implementation of recommendations made by the health and safety committees The debate continues HOUSED ODDlTlES Philadelphias Independence Hall once served as jail and then as popular museum housing stuffed fivelegged twotailed cow the Local News and the
