paying off VANCOUVER CPIRonald Woodall says hes more inter ested in buildings than in paint ing but his interest in the build ings has led him into lucrative art career didnt set out to be pain tei said Mr Woodall at recent exhibition of his paint ings developed an obsession about buildings saw all these nice things sitting around rot ting and realized that no one was savingthcm So he decided to preserve them on paper at least Im really selftaught said the bearded artist He did spend three years at Montreals luseum of Fine Arts but said those years were long ago and ot little use in his current obses sion lliat obsession began 16 years ago when Mr Woodall was driving west to join Van couver advertising agency as copywriter In oloiado ghost town he spotted decaying building and realized our heritage is rot tingaroundus ICQLIVAIJINT TU RLINS These buildings are the Norv th American white mans equivalent to ancient rums lr Voodall said Their abandonment is phenomenon exclusive to North America Since then Mr Woodall his wife and two children have driven more than 100000 miles in search of old buildings and the painter has amassed tens of thousands of photographs and few hundred watercolors of them He begins his work from pho tographs but abandons them after the first sketch realize he said might make it touch taller or longer or put on shake roof instead of its asbestos roof It is portrait not photo graph The artist changes the set ting removes or inserts details and never thinks of the people who might have occupied the structure People have nothing to do with the buildings Mr Woodall said he once iii vented building because he couldnt find one that properly represented the setting in which he was working Restorations dont interest him although its better to have them than nothing Mr Woodall quit his advertis ing job 18 months ago to devote full time to his obsession which he estimates has cost him $210 000 in expenses thus far The Canada Council has assisted with $0000 grant London schools OK calculators LONDON nt tCPi To day students can answer in about 13 seconds problems such as how many times heart beats in 70year life span or how many times car whecl revolves in 100mile journey The answers do not come from many separate calcu lations but from pocketsized electronic calculator After shaky start calcu lators have been accepted in London high schools sed properly an electronic calculator is tremendous tool which can take much of the painful labor out of basic math ematics says Brock Rachar mathemctics coordinator with the London board of education alculators have replaced the sliderule and in high schools more than half the sen iorstudentsareusingthem lhcir widespread use has opened all kinds of new doors to math teachers They now can present morecomplex problems to students and get quick accurate answers within seconds London stores stock calcu lators that sell from $10 to as much as $1000 Calculators in fact have turned into the citys most pop ular hristmas or birthday presents Mr ltachersays ANXHITIIIS EASE Teachers have overcome their initial anxieties about calculators because they now feel the machines wont lead to generation of illiterate mathematicians It was felt by many people that students would learn their mathematics from calculators without ever touching on basic theory But that argument has been overruled because student wouldnt be able to use his cal culator without basic theory Mr Racher says However the London board of education was concerned about the distribution of calculators in the classroom Mr Racher says the board ruled that if any students showed up for mathematics test without calculator then none of the students could use one The board recommended that calculators be used only to check homework and not for the initial calculations PROCLAMATION DORIAN PARKER by virtue of my Office as MAYOR of the CITY OF BARRIE do hereby proclaim the week of NOVEMBER
