the kid neys Could you tell me which vitamins are safe and which are harmfulMrs IIJ Let me deal with vitamin first The body doesnt manufac ture vitamin so it must be ob tained from our food chiefly the citrus fruits tomatoes and green vegetables Neither is vitamin stored in the body so we need rather steady continual intake of it The recommended daily intake is between 60 and 100 milli grams You dont tell me just how much supplement you have been taking daily and how much above your daily needs it represents Excessive doses can be an in direct cause of kidney stones The vitamin degrades breaks down to substance called oxalic acid and this in turn can cause kidney stones Overly large doses also may degrade vitamin B12 which could lead to anemia But if you are taking mod est supplement of vitamin you need not worry except it is wise to keep the possible effects mentioned above in mind As to your second question all vitamins are safe when taken in required amounts These daily amounts are usu ally listed on containers Vitamins and in ex cessive amounts can cause toxic symptoms chiefly be cause they arc fat soluble That means that they can become part of the fat and thus be stored in the body Like vitamins in excess are nor mally lost in urination Vitamins are essential each in its own specific way to our health but many persons go overboard The thinking is that if little helps more will be better Ideallv vitamin supple ment takers should use only what their bodies need Charts are available that list vitamin values for standard servings of most foods It would not be dif ficult for anyone to find out just how much of each vitamin he is getting from food intake The use of supplements should be based on this But from practical stand point we know most folks dont do this and continue to overload their systems with vitamins which at best only lighten thcir pocketbooks and at worst hold potential dangers But there are exceptions SOME people need SOME vitamin supplements chiefly babies and undernourished old stcrs Dear Dr Thostesoii have problem with phlegm in my throat when awake in thc mor ning It coats my throat and have hard time getting it out have had this for several mon ths also choke easily even on orange juice am 69 years old and overweight Can you advise mconthis7AAM To begin with oldstcrs tend to have more difficult time swallowing Better chewing of food and swallowing more slowly can help But this would not be true of course of your difficulty with liquids would suspect such factors as obesity We some times forget that when we gain weight we gain it generallyï¬ that is all over even in the gul let There it would tend to nar row the passage and cause dif ficultics in swallowing As for your excessive phlegm this should be in vestigated Excessive smoking can be cause as could ex cessive nasal drainage caused either by sinus infection or an allergy perhaps to some material in your room Mouth breathing during sleep can cause the mucus to be dricr and thicker Malnutrition problem on campuses he says CHATIIAM nt CPi Contrary to popular belief malnutrition is the biggest health problem on university campuses says Joc Saso University of Windsor secon dary school liaison officer Students arc notorious for not eating wcll he said Wod nesday in an information meeting with parents and stu dents at local big xhool He said wellknown hamlt burger chain outlct near his campus in Windsor int is probably one of the most suc cessful in Canada because of students taste in food or their inability tocook If you dont eat well you cannot study well he said Ilc urged students to visit campuses and be dis criminating keeping in mind the amount of money needed to finance an education Dont let anybody sell you orl their university because theyve got great pub he said Students or parents should expect to spend $650 for tuition $1600 for room and board $150 for books and have about $600 in pockct money for the first year of university he added Tuitions may soon increase by $100 and books may become more expensive he said Graph Bernice Bede Osol Birthday Nov 1976 You have good chance to forge ahead this coming year through friends and nail polish stains f1 By Polly Cramer Pollys Problem DEAR POLLY My 5yearold daughter recently painted the plastic front on my clockradio with nail polish would like to know if there is there is any way of getting this off without ruining the plastic LD DEAR LD After was not able to learn anything definite about removing nail polish from plastic did bit of experimenting myself found piece of plastic that thought would be about the weight of the plastic front on your radio tried using the obvious nail polish remover on it applied this with cotton tipped stick and only on the places that had polish It did remove it all but left the finish dull On such small piece one could go over the entire piece with the remover so the finish would be the same even if dull tried using several things to restore some luster to the finish Liquid car wax did the most for It This was far from perfect job but was certainly all improve ment over red spots scattered about think anything strong enough to remove nail polish is going to remove the gloss with the polish Test on an lnconspicious spot POLLY DEAR POLLY My Pet Peeve is to read that mother has put clothes hamper in every room for the dirty clothes She then washes the clothes and puts them back in the hamper to go to each room It seems to me she is putting clean clothes in dirty hampers In case of sickness it seems the clean clothes would be immediately reinfected with germs do not know this is just something have been thinking about What is your opinion RL DEAR RL Why not give her the benefit of doubt and assume she cleans the hampers when need be POLLY DEAR POLLY have discovered that those sheets of fabric softener are fine to use for cleaning the lint screen in my electric dryer After the wash is dry reuse this sheet to clean the lint out It serves double duty MRS NHS DEAR POLLY After my full size zippered box spring cover wore out discovered that fitted sheet put on upside down over the spring is less work and less expensive The bot tom and sides of the box spring are covered with the sheet and the top is covered with the innerspring mattress This works on beds of all sizes DOROTHY DEAR POLLY We drilled holes in the tops of some bottle caps and put them on the light chains over the work bench pool table and laundry tubs to make the chains easier to see and to pull Slip the metal piece up the cord cut off the knot slip the bottle cap on and tie another knot Another helpful Pointer is that my husband skinned piece of electric cord cut off some of the tiny copper wires and made threaders for me to use to
