8The Barrie Examiner Friday July 23 1976 WHEEL Olympics future in jeopardy By ED HARPER Chay After great opening ceremony the Olym ic Games got under way and there have been many outstan ing rts eats by the participating athletes believe that we Cana ians should enjoy as much of this great sports spectacle as possible because we may be seeing the last Olympic Games for many years to come With more than 30 countries withdrawing from the games it has affected more than half of the 21 Olympic sports with boxing soccer and field hockey most seriously affected Louis Chantigny the Olympic press chief claims that lost revenue from ticket sales to date is more than $300000 and that conces sionaires have lost more than $1million Will things be better in 1980 believe that they will be worse because in 1980 more of the larger countries will withdraw when Israel may be banned from the games the future of the games looks to be in jeopardy THROWN OUT As if political troubles were not enough to take the glamor away from the Olympics Russian by the name of Boris Onischenko threetime world champion pentathlon com petitor was thrown out of the games on Mon for cheating The epee he was using was found to be rigged in such way that when he activated it hit was recorded on the electric scoring device without his epee actually touehing an ponent The question that pops into everyones min is how long has he been using this device and how many championships has he wonwithit It has been stated by officials that it was possible that Onischenkos coaches were aware of the rigged device and that they may be as much to blame as him To make things even worse the British opponent when the Russian was caught was Jeremy Fox longtime close friend Fox was stunned over the event and could hardly believe that his friend was capable of using rigged epee against him PERFECT SCORES On the brighter side of Olympic competition we have seen the outstanding performance of l4yearold Romanian girl Nadia Comaneci who has recorded five perfect scores in gym nastics in fewer number of day One good performance for Canada was Shannon Smith of Vancouver winning the bronze medal in the 400meter free style and she is expected to do even better in the 800metcr freestyle Even as am writing this column Nancy Garapick of Halifax has just won bronze medal in the loometer back stroke and there may be further medals for Canada before this column is published on Friday ur Canadian athletes may not win many medals during the Olympics but there are many who will give their sup porters thrill by coming up with an outstanding effort DISAPPOINTEI personally was very disappointed in the effort of Jocelyn Lovell of anada in the LOGOmeter cycling time trial He has been preparing for this event for the past four years and had ridden the distance faster several times before and was ex pected to win medal in this event But people are like animals and are unpredictable It could be that Jocelyn was not feeling his best on Tuesday Those who know him feel badly as he can do far better than the ride he gave in Montreal The 1000 meters is one of the events that Jeff Maiich young cycling prospect from Barrie will be concentrating on during the next couple of years in preparation for the Com monwealth Games in Edmonton Jeff has the making of champion and if the pressures are not too much for him he could bring lot of glory to Barrie in the near future Maiich is outstanding at the 4000 meter individual pursuit race also and has beaten few of Canadas best at this distance If the Olympic Games should continue in 1980 dont be sur prised if Barrie is represented and remember told you so Busy weekend for Ivy Rangers Ivy Rangers who up to datc have won 13 games and lost two are still in second spot in
