8The Barrie Examiner Friday July I976 Keep politics out of Olympics By ED HARPER Chay As time grows near to start our ic Games more goubles loom as threat to spoil what cgul be the greatest ing that ever happened to Canada This time it is politics the anadian Government refuses to let Taiwans athletes compete under theflagof the Re blic of China Lord Killamn presi ent of the International Olympic Com mitteesays that Montreal would not have been awarded the games if the question of nations had come up at the time Mon treal made its bid for the Olympics He accused the Canadian Government of setting precedent that could endager the future of the games When Montreal bid for the games there was no question of entries The 100 was guaranteed that permits would be available to all countries that wished to compete He said the ICC was guaranteed that all conditions would be met and that Prime Minister Trudeau sent the 100 letter confirming theguarantee He said he was not aware of Canadas position until May 28 when IOC member Jim Worral from Canada telephoned him with the news of the govemments stand The Canadian External Affairs Office claims that the LDC was aware of the situation for the last year IN SUPPORT Apparently most international sports federations have made it known that they are in support of the LDC and that all na tions should be able to partici ate in the Olympics They felt that politics should be le tout orsports Canadians have done all in their power to ruin the Olympics The workers were constantly on strike demanding unreasonable wages that was nothing short of blackmail But when they knew that the Games could be taken away from Canada and that there would then be no need for the buildings thus putting them permanently out of job on the Olympic site they dug in and completed the job But by that time some sec tors of the labor force were drawing as much as one thousand dollars per week Pretty ridiculous Inferior work was done on some of the buildings and jobs had to be repeated because of faulty work Many accidents hap pened and sabotage too which caused delays There were payoffs to various people and some contractors were actually robbing the City of Montreal For the life of me cant understand how good Canadian could jeopardize the future reputation of his country for greed It wouldnt even happen in country like Russia Now read that the clerks and cashiers of publiclyowned liquor stores are going to strike during the month the Olym ics are on get more disgusted with the goingscn in Montrea each day REVIEWING STAND Our Canadian athletes cant very well march proudly past the reviewing stand at our Canadian Olympic Games when they are representing people who think more of politics than the re uta tion of the country people who would sabotage wor on buildings to delay construction for their own greed people who would cheat rob and pay people off in order to line their own pockets Is this what our Canadian athletes have been training for the past year or more If it is then say lets forget the Olympics there are many intermational sports events each Slessor and Periard Juniors of the Barrie and District Senior Softball League team shown here will be conr peting in the Ontario Associa at Griinsby Ont this weekend Winner of the threeday tournament which starts today will have the opportunity of representing Ontario in worth $75 and the runnerup prize is $50 year for our Candian athletes in countries where they will be appreciated and where sports help to cement good relationships with the nations of the world Something has been lost from the excitement that the Cana dian Olympic Games should bring to the sportsman or sport swoman of Canada Maybe the athletes from all over the world can recover the spirit of these games but they have very large job mending the damage that stubborn government and lot of greedy people have done to our Canadian Olympic Games Jones well rested for allstar game CHICAGO AP
