CONSTANT READER CanLit reaches new The Barrie Examiner Friday June 25 19763A lateau middlelevel books printed Canadian literature has come of age Canadian writers have come long way from the bad old days of short while when only the very very best ecame published Canadians can now point with certain amount of pride to the emergence of junk books This is not bad thing To be published Canadian writers must have Canadian publishers The selling record of good Camps open on July If Spring sprang halfsprung this year will summer he hummer ora bummer Over one thousand han dicapped children could be asking themselves that as they eagerly look forward to two week camping vacation this year at the Ontario Society for Crippled Childrens five sum mer camps Un Sunday July these specially designed camps will throw open their gates to the first groups of excited youngsters from all over the province Camping has been an imlt portant part of the Societys program since it opened its fir st camp Blue Mountain near Iollingwood in 1937 Since then four more camps sprang tolife Woodeden near London in 1946 Merrywood near Smith Falls in 1948 Lakewood and Northwood near Port Colbornc and Kirkland Lake in 1954 Most youngsters enjoy cam ping and the crippled child is no exception In fact to him it of fers so much more in the way of imaginative programs and ac tivities that are all too often denied him in the normal cour se of events More youngsters will compete in variety of activities not So much against each other but against their individual hanr dicops All activities are designed to encourage and con tinue the active rehabilitation of each child both physically and emotionally in pleasant surroundings with particular emphasis on individual par ticipation by every camper 300 invited to Edenvale EDENVALE More than 300 personal invitations have gone out for Edenvales Old Home Weekend to be held Saturday July 10 and Sun dayJuIyll Former teachers pupils and ministers have been asked to attend the event ac current Canadian literature has not been good enough to keep Canadian publishers healthy enough to finance all the good writing there must be in Canada So publishers need middle level of books cut above Canadas national em barrassment Harlequin books cut below Margaret Laurence to keep the money coming in Simon and Schuster of Canada Ltd subsidiary of the major American book publisher has 26 books coming out under its Pocket Book im print Three have arrived in the past week at the desk of the Constant Reader Book publishing has never really had the genteel image most like to think it has It is pretty rough business what after all does publisher do with 3000 copies of Colonel Boredoms history of field hospitals in the Canadian Signal Corps Pocket Books decision to publish 26 Canadian titles even in paperback is major decision one showing that the people who sell the books are confident there is market for Canadian writing TO THE BOOKS The three facing Constant Reader are Summer of Change$l95 by Russ Cornell The St James Quest also $195 by Stephen Notar and Buy Canadian $175 by Pat Ban clay Summer of Change says the cover is about Life and death love and sex politics and work in small divided town Well it is There isnt much that is With Winmien fidWI Do You See Your Problems Here deHfitw Tflmwhhnfik hummusmum hadHWMHQMMII believable in the book which letters if the author can doesnt detract from its entinues Constant Reader will tertainment value No information appears to be be watching to see if Pat Barclays name shows up available about the author of again on book and will read this or the other books but if it is first book and even if it isnt dialogue is handled very well The plot once one gets awa from its outagewsness is we done But the ending Well bearing in mind the plot possible The St James Quest is much different book about man seeking the mother who apparently left him in an or phanage Stephen Notar keeps in terrupting the action with political asides that do nothing to advance either plot or characterization The plot is pretty non existent abounding in coin cidences Despite that Stephen Notar holds the readers attention with generous descriptive helpings PROBABLY BEST Buy Canadian is probably the best of the three books It is about very modern young lady who has very old fashioned young gentleman friend and that segment of their lives when they leave university She decides to open shop which sells only Canadian goods It has happy ending in the oldfashioned sense of happy endings following thoroughly modern set of complications All three books show signs of being first novels Pat Barclay sh0ws signs of carving out peculiar niche in Canadian DONT BE SLAVE To Hard Water it The three books if published in the United States wouldnt rate second glance what with the great ut of middle level books pub ished there by the likes of Harold Robbins Arthur Bailey know Iknow the late Jacqueline Susann thats not writing says Capote thats typing Theyre the sort of books one picks up at the library in the heat of summer so there will be something to pass the time and forget about the humidity Theyre the kind of books that people read on trains and planes Theyre entertainment far better than TV as what isnt these days cheaper than movies and dyou can blush in private an if they are taken as entertainment they are good value They are not great literature dont approach them as such and you wont be disappointed Sean Finley MUSIC IIANGES Music varies from Operetta to salvation rock and from
