lOThe Barrie Examiner Friday June 25 I976 SPORTS WHEEL By an HARPER Chay From time to time we hear of athletes who have displayed great courage by competing when they are hurt or by continuing on when they are extremely fatigued Athletes such as Marilyn Bell who swam Lake Ontario and won the praise of everyone for her courage and other swimmers who suffered greatly while trying to swim long distances There are also hockey players who have continued to play with various injuries golfers such as Ben Hogan who made comeback after being almost killed in car accident could go on and on telling of the great feats of courage displayed by athletes throughout the more than forty years have been in volved in sports But compared with Reggie McNamara one of the alltime greats of the bicycle racing profession the courageous feats of athletes such as those mentioned above were of little con sequence Reggie started to show his courage when only young boy nine years old He was hunting with his brother on the farm on which he lived in Australia when he was bitten on the right forefinger by snake His brother said that if he didnt have his finger cut off he would die So they went back to the barnyard where Reggie placed his finger on block of wood and his brother chopped his finger off with an axe McNamara was to know pain many more times in his brilliant career as bicycle racer Known as the Iron Man he made his home in Newark NJ Old time fans and sixday riders all agree that there will never be another cyclist like the great McNamara He was born November 11th 1884 in Sydney Australia Reggie was banged up more than any other bicycle rider in the world and more than any athlete in any other competition list of his injuries reads like casualty list in World his ribs broke his collar bone thirteen times broke both arms one that didnt heal properlyl broke leg and had so many stitches for numerous cuts that he 10st count Out of more than one hundred and twenty sixday bicycle races that he started there were only two that he did not finish One was race in San Francisco which he did not complete because of concussion suffered in spill The other one was near the end of his career when he was smashed so badly in spill breaking his leg and arm as well as many other bones that the doctors at one point thought he was dead and notified the newspapers Reggie was one man who read his own obituary He came back to compete in the most strenuous sport in the world and rode his last race in Kansas City at the age of fifty four McNamara held world records from one mile to fifty miles and was truly one of the greatest athletes of all time and ad mittedly the gamest ++++++++++++++++ CONGRATULATIONS to Lorne Smith on his recent holeinone at the eighth
