mainstream SAINT JOHN NB CF There is no reason why men tally retarded individuals can not function in the mainstream of society says the executive director of the Saint John divi sion of the Canadian Associ ation for the Mentally Re tarded Salena Gillies who has been involved with the association for 20 years said in an inter view many mentally retarded persons can function independ ently if adequate training is provided But stable funding was not available to carry out pro gramsparticularly in times of government restraint Mrs Gillies stressed that the earlier child is diagnosed as mentally handicapped the sooner he is exposed to learning techniques Although the association has progressed feel we havent comeasfar as weshould Apart from educational and residential services funded by the province other programs Apparently his mother had named him Steven and his grandmother had named him Schoni Each had filed birth certificate unknown to the other Mr Bolik said lawyers Mr teve problem and Mrs Basta approached wouldnt touch the case It turned out to be easier than expected he says All did was write one let ter The birth certificate came back very quickly or less Overcoming fear of media target of course for kids EDMONTON CP People are afraid of the media and thats why they have such control over people Diane Lemire director of the Media School for Kids and former Montreal teacher wan ts to dispel some of that fear Mastery of the tools of the elec tronic media is as important to day as literacy was at the turn of the century she says The Media School teaches children between the ages of and 17 how to create photo graphs films videotapes and radio shows Opened in 1973 it is operated by Communitas Inc non profit organization working in community access to the media cooperative housing and other ventures Dressed in jeans and plaid flannel shirt Miss Lemire ex plains the idea behind the schools eightweek courses First of all the children are encouraged to touch everything If theyre not familiar with the tools then naturally theyll be alienated THAMES SCHOOLS She blames the school sys tems for much of the alienation from the electronic media They will not use Super film camera with kids and they use Vllts videotape recordersi only to tape pro grams children wouldnt nor mally see during school hours Iheyre afraid the children will break the equipment and thats stupid because the VIR is made for people Its unso phisticated equipment and be sides it can always be re paired She says the school has few problems with equipment dam age Once the children become fav miliar with the equipment theyre impatient to see the re sults of their first efforts An initial project might be photogram photographic print made by placing objects on print paper exposing it to light then developing it The result is white silhouettes on black background LIKE QUICK RESULTS Children like immediate re sults she says so the videotape recorder is popular Students tend to be unusually aggressive in their initial efforts partly be cause they imitate the violence they see on television Younger children especially preschoolers are more creat ive with VTR and dont imitate as much After about three weeks of playing cops and robbers in front of the camera they start to come up with some inter esting vignettes As they discover other tools the more patient youngsters try their hand at filmmaking Us ing kits of colored cord one group made striking animated film and set it to music The process was long and it took three hours to developthe film Others experiment with still photography while older stu dents learn how to script radio shows Children are encouraged to explore whatever medium iii terests them rather than being forced into curriculum ne adult is needed for every three children because no two children are doing the same thingatthesametime Classes were offered last year in English or French at $25 student But this fall the school wont operate unless it receives more funding or volunteers or both In 1975 it was financed by pro vincial and municipal grants Both the province and the city refused requests for another grant Miss Lemire also applied un successfully for an Exploration Canada grant from the federal government Limerick disturbs parishoners RIDGEWELL England CP An English vicars prizewin ning limerick has disturbed his
