11 10The Barrie Examiner Friday June 18 1976 SPORTSW Golf ain easy at 142 par By ED HARPER Chay For many years have tried to master the game of golf never seem to get an better and there is no way can get any worse Last end took my clubs and with lot of confidence headed for one of the local golf courses This was oing to be the year that would conquer the game The ollowing is what happened on each hole Hole par 499 yards 18 straightaway with water ditch about 50 yards out My drive was right down centre about It yards and my second shot was dandy in the centre of the fairway about 130 yards to the flag was star ting to think that this game was easy but on my approach shot topped the ball and it rolled about 25 yards and then it took me two more shots to get on the green Then three putted for score of ei ton the hole Hole par 340 is slight dogleg to the right with trees on both sides of the fairway My drive went through the trees to the left ending up on another fairway To get back on the right course had to go between trees but made good shot with my ball landing in the fairway about 90 yards from the pin My next Shot went over the green into some deep grass and it took me three shots to get on the green where twoputted for another eight Hole par 350 yds was straighaway with water ditch 50 yards out and that is where my drive landed The ball travelled ten times higher than it did in distance and plop ped in the water finally reached the green in in four then took another four to get in the hole Another eight Hole par 570 yds straight to the green with more water halfway got away great drive right down the cen tre only short distance from the water ditch But where did my second shot end up Right in the water did manage to break my regular eight score per hole with seven and this was the longest hole on the course Not too bad after being in the water and losing stroke Hole par 248 yds had good drive but my second shot went over the green into some deep grass My third shot was dandy only couple of feet from the hole Would you believe that it took me four shots to put the ball in the hole Another seven on the score sheet Hole par 310 yds dogleg to the right My drive went into some deep rough to he left of the fairway 150 yards out It took me two shots to get back on the fairway and three more to reach the green where two utted for another eight At this time was starting to lose confi ence Hole par 310 yds dogleg to the left with water on the left side of the green and sand trap on the other reached the water in two shots making three shots with the penalty My next shot went into the sand trap and then it took me two more shots to get out of the sand trap and onto the green and three more shots to hole the ball had just dropped to big nine Hole par 157 yds straightaway with pond in front of the tee and water ditch half way to the green managed to get over the pond but my ball landed in the ditch My next shot went over the green and into bush and finally ended up with another nine Very embarassing as was playing golf with my wife and she got four on this hole Hole par 398 yds with slight curve to the right with three sand traps around the green and water ditch 175 yards out Thats where my ball went right into the ditch managed to salvage seven after taking the penalty My total score for the first nine holes was shameful 71 played the back nine with no better results shooting another 71 for total score of 142 wont bore my readers with holebyhole resume of by back nini some of the things did you would have to see to believe am not going to let myself get discouraged have been playing like this for many years and still love the game If youre golfer hope you have great summer with low scores But if you should be like me keep playing there is only one way we can go Guthrie public school claims tourney title Guthrie Public School cap tured the boys championship at the Oro Rural Invitational Sofball Tournament at East Oro
