Tuesday from to pm at the school Ex aminer Photo Higher costs hurting Canada tradeRgnard By DR RYNARD MP Simcoe North Perhaps one of the most serious problems we have and will have in the future in Canada is the difficulty of selling our goods in the world markets and indeed in sell ing them to our own peOple People shop and buy where they can get the best article for the best price This can be easily proven by looking at the shoe industry or the tex tile industry The textile in dustry in Canada has only about 48 per cent of our own market in addition to small export market It is difficult to meet the competition of firms in Taiwain Hong Kong or China and other countries where many of them have had American technology in troduced into their textile business Where this has not been done small part is manufactured in the homes where people make and sew the clothing The wage rate in these countries runs around 40 cents per hour It has been suggested that we ship our raw materials to these coun tries have them manufac tured and brought back to Canada SHIFTS JOBS think it must be obvious to most Canadians that we have been following this procedure for far too long Statistics will show that in the primary in dustries of this country that the production of these goods takes one laboring person while the manufacturing takes three people So all we really accomplish when we follow this type of policy is to export employ ment and import unemploy ment The only salvation there has been in the textile trade is that there has been tremendous difference in col ors and in fashions of mens shirts over the last few years making it very uncertain what the fashions the future really will be manufacturer from Do minion Textiles told me it would be very difficult indeed for the textile market to hold the place it does now if every one were to wear white shirts again Manufacturers would know what the fashion would be and would im ort thousands of white irts knowing there would be market waiting for them in COUNTY GLIMPSES Open demonstration area MIDHURST The crop demonstration area on County Road 11 at Midhurst is now open to the public The 15acre area owned by the North one man in agriculture feeds 40 people when at the turn of the century he fed one person CANADA PAY II Basically and fundamental ly inflation has hit us hard until today as an American told me the wage rate across the board in the United States is less than anadas wage rate even though their pro ductivity was higher asked him how this was possible This gentleman was very closely related to labor and he said that the American workmen through unions had invested very heavily in the industry of the United States and nearly every man had stake in the progress of the in dustrial world He compared the tremen dous investment of capital by the working man and the unions in the United States as form of union capitalism and that they had as much in terest in keeping the United States on
