dreams of solving the worlds food problem overnight but they are still making steady ad vances in new crop strains The successes in Mexico have been with wheat and corn the staple foods of much of the world and there is hope that manmade cereal known as Triticale can one day replace traditional crops The heady optimism of the 19605 is lead Those were the years when new highyielding seed developed at the Inter national Wheat aiid Maize Im provement Centre here known as Cimmyt from its Spanish ini tials doubled wheat production in the Indian subcontinent in less than decade The director of imtnyts wheat program Dr Norman Borlaug of the Inited States won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 for his work There were hopes that sim ilar breakthrough Could be made for other basic food crops AGEOFMIRIJCSUYIIR But now there are no more miracles in sight orn has proved much more difficult to improve than wheat and high yield varieties do not thrive un der the primitive farming con ditions of most parts of the do veloping world The wheatrye cross known as Iriticale is still grown only in tiny quantities and is not ex pected to challenge traditional crops until the 1990s The more modest improve ments of the last few years can be summarized as follows Wheat Research has been going forward to produce even higher yields bigger food cori tent and varieties resistant to new types of disease that are constantlycvolving The best whcats now grown by immyt yield more than nine tons per hectare 125 acresw about 12 times more than the average MrXicaii for mer was gittiiigoiit oi
